You need to drain it at least partly
to change , then refill when done.
Otherwise = Yes , you will lose up to a gallon
of liquid and make a mess on your engine and driveway and Pollute the Environment....

A very small amount from the upper hose and a dribble when
you take off the water neck nothing to really be concerned
about. When I changed mine I kept a bucket under the engine to
catch any run off.
