Subject: Is there any truth to this??? IP: Logged
Message: Just wondering if someone could tell me if it is tre that a truck with a V8 will get better gas mileage than a V6 because it is not as hard for the bigger engine to push a smaller truck.
Also, if you are swapping a v6 for a v8 will the tranny from the v6 work

Message: I wouldn't say it would get better gas mileage, rather they could be about the same.

Message: With the V8 comes a heavier foot (right) so no you do not get better mileage got a V6 so I wouldn't relapse into the old street racing habits

Message: The v8 will get slightly worse. The engine itself is heavier, as well as the cooling system and everything to support the engine. The v8 doesn't have to do less work than the v6 to move the vehicle, it still has to do the same amount, it's just that the amount is a smaller percentage of what it is capable of. Either way a certain amount of gas has to be burned to produce the energy to move the vehicle.

Message: Well, here is my theory. the v6 and v8 have the same tranny and rear end ratio, soooooo both of the engines have to spin at the same RPM's to go the same speed. Therefore, there are two more injectors firing at every rotation, getting a worse gas mileage figure.

Message: Yes the trannys are the same. Same as the full size Ram truck. With a V-8 you can run a higher rear ratio to make up the difference. Great especially in OD.

Message: Actually, i've had both. I had a 2001 dakota club cab, and now a 4wd 2004 quad cab. i notice a definitive power difference of course. my 01 had a v8, the 04 has a 6. i got better gas mileage with the 8, but it is due more to driving style. i don't like to take forever getting to speed, so i usually end pushin the 6 harder to get movin quicker. so in the end due to driving style, i get worse mileage with the 6.

Message: The V-6 has the 42RH tranny, the V-8 has the 46RH tranny. They have slightly different gear ratios, and the 46RH is the heavy-duty model.
Gas mileage difference is slight, and the biggest improvement you can make is with your right foot. Take it easy or have fun, but not both.
