Subject: Climbing Gas Prices, MPG needs to go up IP: Logged
Message: I am wondering what can be done to raise MPG.
Because I have to do something, because it cost me $8 a day to travel to work. And that’s $160 alone in a month just for work travel. Not to mention pleasure driving.
$160 a month could be a payment for bike, or cheap gas saver like an older Honda.
I know the usual take it easy on the throttle.
But even when I do that, I might see a 2-3mpg increase. Are there any mods I can do to get more?
Gains then that?
I am thinking about a rev limiter to limit the rpms to 3k that way my foot will have to be out of the gas. Or is that a little over thinking.
Are any of my mods decreasing MPG? Such as my v8tb, IAT adjuster, .35 gap autolite plugs, glass pack exhaust?
Is there something that could be fabricated to increase MPG like a restrictor plate or something like that?

Message: I wouldnt do anything like restricting ur RPM's to 3k, or a restrictor plate. If you lower ur rev limiter or something, what if you need that power one day to quickly scoot out of the way of a car about to hit you, etc. Just dont hit the gas as hard...simple as that. I dont get on it hardly at all anymore, and i went from about 15MPG to 18MPG.
I'm thinking about a K&N Intake...what is the part number for the one thats suppoesd to be for V8's but supposedly fits our V6's too. I'm guessing that will add MPG, Im interested in upping the fuel economy a bit too, its my excuse to make myself feel the need to buy an upgrade.

Get a tonneau cover. I went from 16.5 MPG to 19 even. All freeway driving. Got an extra MPG using Mobil 1.

Try going back to original setup on that.
Otherwise I see the other mods increasing
as long as you can keep that Wompitis under control...lol.lol.

Message: Actually switching to Amsoil (or just all TRUE synthetics) may increase gas mileage a tad bit... also that PVI gas mileage increasing gadget works from what Larry's said. Also like mentioned above, a tonneau cover will help some. Make sure your tires are all at the proper pressure. If you got a 180*F thermostat, you may be losing some there.

Message: make sure your tire pressures are balanced & up pretty high. low pressure in the tires will suck up some mpg. keeping the tires harder means less resistance, but can make the ride a little bit rougher.
in switching to amsoil in my engine and differential, and beefing up the tire pressure, i can get over 20 mpg in my club cab 3.9 automatic

Message: Be sure that plugs, rotor and cap are in top condition. Try the more open gap of .038-.040 thinking that a hotter bigger spark will ignite injection better and more completely = more hp per gallon. Make certain the ignition coil and ignition wires are all good. Lose weight. Not yours (but couldn't hurt ;) Drop those dual 15" subs and the 5000 watt amps. I was able to drop a 50 pound skid plate. Lose the clutch fan and go to a black magic 150 electric fan. A flexifan will also rob less power than a clutch fan but robs more than the alternator drag from running the A/C with an electric fan running. Underdrive pully set. Reasonable tires- not 35" flotation tires. try 245/75 +/-. After market wheels could add weight but sometimes weigh less too. Keep motor oil clean and fresh. Clean your engine for alot of reasons but for now so that it can cool better and show you power robbing leaks. Change oil filter at each oil change. Absolutely keep a clean air filter around or get the K&N (biggest single power thief is bad intake airflow). Pull of the debris shield out of the intake airhose at the grill. Plan your trips and run errands in circular paths. All the above posts are good suggestions too. I did all this and gained about 4 mpg before trying & failing to change my driving style. Note about above posts: I agree rev limiting is a bad idea-you may need passing power or uphill power.

Message: Gas price is nuts
My 95 4X4 with stock 92 motor all the bolt ons
port matched intake gets 23 24 mpg
I am also running Mike Golkas PVI injector and a
stage 2 chip
Some one on the board here just put a PVI system
on his 99 think it was and went from 20.7 to
22. something the systems do help.
http://www.dodgedakota.net/boards/v6/8710.html
With the PVI Jet 2 and 4 degrees crank sensor
advance I am still running on reg fuel with no
ping and great performance.
The PVI adds 3 to 5 points to the oct rating of
the fuel
Maybe you guys should look into the system
If you call Mike and tell him Larry from J&J told
you about the system you will get a better price
lessgas.com
http://www.lessgas.com/
PVI3000 is the basic system as I have here
http://www.dodgedakota.net/boards/v6/6225.html
Also a message from Mike Golka himself on this
thread
Just call than print out the form and fax the
order it takes about 1 week delivery time
I also ran this on my stroked motor with premium
and was able to run more timing without and ping
Good luck the gas price is hitting us all

What about his system? It claims a 10.5 mpg improvement on a 94 Dakota w/ a 318. I think this is an exaggeration.
But what do you think?
Still unsure about either of these products. I mean if I only see a 2mpg increase that’s saving about roughly $16 a month on gas. And that’s at its current prices.
That means I would need this system on for close to a year for it to pay it self off.

Message: Uh... I find that hard to believe. Throttle body spacers generally do absolutely nothing, but even if you did get SOME gains out of it, you wouldn't get that much. I think you probably changed your driving habits some or something else that you didn't realize.

Message: Loose the V8 TB and the IAT adjuster. Both hurt mileage big time.
There's no bolt on remedies to decrease fuel consumption. If there were our trucks would come with them from the factory. It would be to DC's advantage to have the lowest fuel consumtion ratings possible.
Switching to synthetic oil is a net loss proposition. The only realistic solution is to buy a small shlt box for commuting. I picked up a 91 Sentra 1.6 for $500 8 weeks ago and put $300 into it. I'll be in the black in 4 weeks and everything after that is gravy. I still use my Dak for hauling and towing but for commuting it's a gawdawfulexpensive gas guzzling pig.

Since so many mentioned Amsoil ...
Yes, when switching to synthetics you should see an increase in mpg, but only between 1% - 5% on average.
However, with Amsoil you can extend your oil changes, use less oil, and perhaps have a positive effect on overall oil (gasoline) prices.
