Subject: Hissing Sound IP: Logged
Message: I have a '98 3.9L and was doing a little work on it today (radiator flush), and while it was running i heard a slight hissing noise coming from the somewhere. I narrowed it down to the front of the engine on the drivers side. Like I said it is a constant "Hiss" and does not change any. When i rev the engine a little, it gets a little louder, but not much. There is no extra noise in the cab when cruising. There is no smeel either of exhaust (first thought an exhaust gaskit.) It's coming from the front of the engine like i said. the power stearing is right there, could it be that? I turned the wheels a little and nothing much changed. any ideas? Is this something i should worry about, watch, or a normal noise? Thanks for any help in advance.

Message: You said you were messin' with the radiator. Loose cap? Hose clamp loose? Small hole in a hose? Only things I can think of. Unless the A/C was running while you had the engine going. Then you might want to look at the condenser coil.

Message: Could also be a vacuum leak. My hissing sound came from the vacuum hose coming out of the front of the throttle body. It had completely fallen apart.

Message: Thanks for all the ideas. I had just started draining the radiator so I had not messed with the hoses, plus i have heard thise for a few weeks, but never thought much of it. Now that i have replaced the hoses, cap and so on, it is still there. The AC was not on, infact the heater was on and on high. I had dual exhaust put on about 2 months ago. The sound seems to be coming from either the power stearing or the front of the exhaust manifold. I hope that it is just a sound of use and nothing going bad. Thanks for the help though.

Message: I have a hissing sound everytime I get out of the truck. Mine is water condinsing from the A/C and dropping onto the hot exhaust pipe. But if your A/C wasn't on, I don't know what it could be.

Message: Spray some carb cleaner around where the hissing sound is. If the engine speed changes, you have a vacuum leak.

Message: would you describe it as a faint grinding sound? My 2001 makes that grinding hissing sound and we have been blaming it on the power steering. It's definitly an acessory noise, even if it isn't the power steering. But thats my truck, you may be experiencing something different.

Message: I got one too. Thing is, it did that after i changed over to my GenII air cleaner system from K&N. Thing is, i checked every thing over and i think it's just the universle gasket they sent me. I'm guessing it's larger and while the truck is running it vibrates to the point of a hiss. Sounds kinda cool actully, when i rev i get alot of wide eye'd stares because people think i got a turbo...sometimes she even backfires insink with it (still gotta find out what causes that...did a tune up, checked the codes, only have a one year old catlitic converter on it...oh well, it only happens once in a great while...mostly on the 80 and higher days).

Message: My '03 dak cc w/ 3.9 has that same hiss. Front drivers side of the engine compartment, sounds like its near the pwr steering pump. It alternates from a constant hiss to a pulsing hiss roughly 5-6 times a second... doesn't see to be affected by rpms. It has been doing this for probably half a year now. I have not noticed any other symptoms, nor have I been able to isolate where its coming from. It IS the loudest part of the truck at idle and it irritates me. My only mod is an air intake, but its been doing this since before that was done. I hope this stirs up some new info on this problem. I want to hear my truck, not a hissing sound. Please help.

Message: bingo... went out to the truck and found that hose coming off the front of the throttle body.... straight over to a Y adapter behind the power steering pump, right at the bottom of that whole mess of cables and hoses next to the positive terminal on the battery. The hose had split just like swilliamson said.. "My hissing sound came from the vacuum hose coming out of the front of the throttle body. It had completely fallen apart." so I cut the hose and plugged it back in. What was that? Can you hear that? woah.. the engine! I can hear my engine again!!!

Message: hey guys
someone recomended spraying carb cleaner around an area you suspect and want to check for a vacum leak,
not a good idea that stuff will deteriorate the rubber vacum hoses in a few shakes
use one of the small propane torches
(not lit of course)
turn it all the way up and move it close to the general area, and around,
(follow the hoses with the tip)
when you find a leak the idle will pick up
an to narrow in on the leak better
then turn the gas down
(and i am not flameing the other guy
he means well and was just passing on his idea)

Message: Normal Carb cleaner will not deteriorate rubber. You can also use WD-40 or something similar. I've been using it for 25 years for this purpose. Now, if you get it on taped harnesses or a painted part of the car, you may be in trouble, but that goes for any solvent.
