Subject: Hey Larry, Fan Clutch? IP: Logged
Message: Hey Larry, I've got a 1998 4x4 V6 and I want to replace my fan clutch with an elecrtic fan. What's a good brand of fan and is there a temp. sensor already on my engine that I can use to cycle the fan on/off? All of you that aren't named Larry can jump in this one too. Relf.

Message: I replaced the clutch fan on my 99 with a black magic 150 fan. I
had to fabricate my own mounting brackets to secure it to the
radiator, which isn't very hard to do. I don't like their adjustable
thermostat though, I've gone through 3 of them and put in
numerous calls to tech support and we still can't figure out why
it won't work. The way mine is wired (and per the instructions)
there is a splice you make into the a/c compressor power line so
that when it comes on your radiator fan will come on too. So, in
most positions on the fan knob in the passenger compartment,
when it is on, the radiator fan will come on too. There is a temp
sensor on your truck now it is behind the alternator and down a
bit on the block. I'm debating making some kind of T pipe to
splice in my own temperature sender to turn on the fan via a
relay. According to the FSM there is a drain plug on the driver's
side of the block just below the exhaust manifold, but all I saw
when I went looking for it are the 4 bolts that bolt the head to
the block. Bottom line, the black magic fan works, just not the
adjustable thermostat part.

Message: I removed my fan clutch and just kept the stock electric one in there. It's only been about a month so far but I havn't had a problem yet. The other day it was about 85-90 degrees with the humidity level about the same and I was in stop and go traffic for about 45 minutes. No problems. It should be said I didn't have the A/C on though.

Message: There are many good eletric fans out there just be
sure its rated at least 2000 cfm or bigger
The BM150 is rated at 2800 I beleave and does cool
very good when it comes on.
Thermo controls, the best I have found is the
Flexolite, Direct coolant read. They install in
the upper rad hose and read direct coolent temp
and work great and they don't leak, 180 to 240
