Subject: Cold Air Intake / Jet Chip IP: Logged
Message: I have a 3.9 4x4 Sport Plus ext cab. with 40 series flowmaster, and I was going to put intake and a jet chip in it to give ti that extra power.
What intake should I get? and which generation of jet chip, 1 or 2? I'd like to limit the intake cost to around $60.

Message: as far as the intake, you can find alot of air intake systems on ebay. you can also make a "home brew" intake with pvc pipe.
The general consensus on jet chips is that they are useless..... I have a stage 2 in my 98 rc v6 auto. it did do a little bit mind you ( I can rev a little higher, my shift points are a little bit diffirent) Nothing other than that i guess, it looks cool though LOL!! I dont think its worth the price though, maybe if it was $100 it would be worth it. its your choice,
i am happy with the 180* thermostat though (required with the stage 2 chip)
just my .02

Message: All the intakes on ebay are for a 4.7+ engine size, will they work on my 3.9? And where can I get a good 180 thermostat if you say it makes a big difference. I just want to be able to keep up with my sisters stock lx mustang.

Message: Yes 99% of the intakes on Ebay will fit a 3.9 because that is what I have. Keep in mind you get what you pay for.. Most of those 60 dollar intakes on ebay are not cold air intakes they are actually sucking in hotter air off your engine.. You can get a Shaw 180 at Autozone and they are like 6 bucks.

Message: The 180 thermo is good for performance, but you might lose 1 mpg. It was worth it for me, my 3.9 runs much better at 180 then it did at 195!
frebius is 100% right about the cheaper intakes sucking in not so cold air... the one I have isn’t the greatest either it was a $50 special LOL. Someday i will have a better setup.
