Subject: What kind of cat? IP: Logged
Message: I am in need of a new catylitic converter and also a new muffler for my 99 dakota sport, 3.9. For the muffler I am basically set on a flowmaster 50 series and for the cat I was going with a carsound but am not sure which one I should get. As far as the size I am not exactly sure but I can check that easy enough. But for the cat I was just wondering what the difference is between one with an air converter and one without? Is one more perormance oriented then the other? What exactly does "3-way" refer to when describing the converter?

Message: Illegal to do so (federal crime), and will not add more than a few HP.
The "3-way" cat refers to the fact that it reduces all 3 target pollutants - hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), and oxides of nitrogen (NOx). Newer cats are this type. There are high-flow cats for those who want to add more power, and will pass emissions.

Message: I have a Carsound cat, I put it on for the emissions test after going without one for amost a year. With my free flowing exhaust, the Cat adds just the right amont of backpressure needed. I would deffinately recommend it!

Message: Okay so I am ready to order my cat and I was just wondering which carsound one would be best for my vehicle, the 3 way with air inlet or no inlet on the converter? Does the air inlet make a difference. By the way my truck is the 3.9 4x4 and I will most likely be using a dynomax muffler.

Message: The mag motors do not use an air injection tube on
the converter.
Its just a tube that pumps air into the converter
used with smog pump equiped vehicles not these
trucks unless its 91 or older
And yes you should run one
Without it will throw your air fuel ratio off
and hit gas mileage by the abnormal o2 temps
the comp was designed to adjust the air fuel with
a cat in the system
The loss of backpresure will also cause a low end
power loss
Carsound high flow is the way to go and with the
50 series muff will give you a nice deep tone and
not rattle your brain out of your head when you
drive it
o2 simulators are more the the guy racing than
street use, you can sim the down stream o2 but not
the upstrem o2 if you want it to run right
The second o2 just tells the comp that the cat is
working, the first o2 controls air fuel in closed
loop
I highly recomend not running without a cat and
not to sim the upstream o2 sensor
