Message: There is a tool for this. The ball joints are pressed in and there is a snap ring at the bottom. Advance Auto will rent the tool, make sure you get the right adapters. If you do what you friend suggest the least of your trouble will be that the truck will never pass an inspection.

I finally got around to doing this project last week and I have to say that it was a lot easier than I thought it would be. The hardest part was figuring out which way to press the lower joints (they press out downward...use the press' post without any adapters on the top to push it out.) If you have a grinder, a BJ seperator, a BJ press and a selection of regular tools, it should be a breeze. I also lucked out because the balljoints I got for a steal off of ebay have zerts! I took pictures and I'll put a tutorial together once I find a good format.

do I have to remove the shock to replace upper ball joints?
