Subject: 99 Dakota P0720 Code IP: Logged
Message: Hey guys,
I got a CHECK ENGINE light a few weeks ago and I just now got the code pulled:
P0720: Malfunction exists in the electrical circuit for the output speed sensor.
What do you think is going wrong? Where is the speed sensor located?
My truck does not run great either, when I first start it up and accelarate in 1st gear, it feels like it's slipping up to about 4500 rpm then it catches.
Truck is a 99 Dakota SLT, Auto tranny.
Thanks for your help in advance.

Message: well my mom hasa 99 Dodge Caravan and its having some tranny problems. It had like 6 codes i read today. i dunno if yours is havin the same problem, but it looks familar to the one i got from the van. Does your speedometer still work? cuz ours stopped working. i went to Auto Zone, and they have a code book, that can tell you what the code means. look there and try and see. hope ive helped a little bit. good luck man!

Message: Speedo is working great, autozone is the place that pulled the code. Do you think it's worth it to take my truck into the dealership, or would I be able to fix this myself?
Thanks, Dan

Message: well its sound like it might be a sensor? if its just that, i dont think a sensor would be hard to replace. ive never actually had to replace one, but i think they are just like a screw in type deal? Maybe call the dealership and ask them what that think it is and try to determind what it could be. sound ok?

Message: The output shaft speed sensor is on the driver's side of the transmission. You can only get the part from the dealer. I just got one today I think it was $25-$40. You can do it yourself easily enough but be prepared to lose 1/2 to 1 quart of fluid when you remove it. At least, that is what I've heard.

Message: On your year - the sensor may be in/on
rear axle !!
Should see a wire/cable connection if so..
Otherwise as another mark sais above..

Message: output speed sensor is not anywhere near the rear axle, there is a senser in it but it is not the output speed sensor. the electricle circuit malfuction that the P0720 code indictes will cause the driving symtoms that he is discribing.
