Hey everyone,

I need to enlist the help of your expertise! A buddy of mine has a 5 spd, 1987 Mazda 323, 1.6L with the 2-bbl carb. It started acting up the other day. Seems to run fine when not under heavy load (ie full of passengers or going up a hill), but when under load, it starts to buck and lurch pretty badly. Almost like when you are on the verge of stalling the engine when letting the clutch out. It also seems to run hot when doing this. We have been trying to diagnose the problem. New wires, cap and rotor didn't help. I thought maybe if he was getting poor or inconsistent fuel flow to the carb it might be doing this. That would also account for the higher engine temp since it would be running lean, right? Anyone have any other ideas. I know most probably aren't familiar with the vehicle type, but some problems are common to all vehicles.

Thanks for the help guys!

J-Man

How much of a load? It's only a 1.6L, what are you trying to make it do?

Nothing crazy. Like I said, if there are people in it, or if it is climbing a hill, it does this. Just normal driving. The bucking and lurching is not normal. It seems to do it at any speed, when a load is applied...

could be a clogged catalytic converter. That could cause all those symptoms.

just to check to see if it's your cat and without spending money, just unbolt your exhaust manifold from the exhaust (before the cat) and see if it will pick up a little better. It will sound like crap and run a little rough but should at least accellerate better than before unless it was a fuel filter.

BUT, the fuel filter would only cause the first batch of symptoms... not the running hot. The cat would cause all and the motor would still rev good while not moving or in neutral but as soon as you put a load on the engine, the a bad cat would cause all that.
