Subject: anyone swapped out a PCM IP: Logged
Message: Has anyone swapped out a pcm on a 99 Dakota 3.9 for another
pcm of the same type (not a custom flash or anything like that)?
I'm asking because I see our voltage regulators are built into the
pcm and if they go you have to change out the entire pcm at the
cost of $520 just for the part. I'm debating getting a backup
pcm through car-parts.com and wondering if it can easily be
done or if the stealer has to perform some magic on making
another pcm work on my vehicle.

Message: the pcm stores a copy of the odo milage on it, mast used car dealers know how to get the read from the odo and pcm to compare,if it is off you could end up with a "rollback" violation that will cost you a bundle in fines. plus to get certain "features" to work such as a factory alarm it needs to be turned on too, and the only way to do that is to have a dealer put the correct VIN number in it.
