Subject: 87 v6 Leaking Carburetor IP: Logged
Message: Saturday I replaced the fuel filter on my 87 v6 3.9L. When I was done I started the truck, let it run for a while, checked for leaks, etc... and everything looked fine. Truck was running smoothly. Sunday, I try to start it, It's choking and sputtering and wont hold an idle. Choke, choke, sputter, and finally cuts out. If I press on the gas, it continues to run but sounds like sh.t . Let off the gas and it stalls.
I double checked the fuel filter and theres no leaks. I took off the air filter to look at the carb itself and saw a puddle of gasoline on the drivers side of the carb, in one of the hollows of the intake manifold, right in front of the egr valve. I cleaned up the gas and tried to start it again, and after it stalled I could see quite a bit of gas sort of seeping out and running down the side. I think it's coming from the upper carb body gasket.
I tightend down the six screws that hold that peice of the carb on and it slowed the flow but it's still not running correctly, it still leaks a little and it idles roughly.
When I was installing the fuel filter I thought to check the gas line connection to the carburetor and tightened it. I'm thinking that actually touching the carb with a wrench may have disturbed what ever crumbling remnants of a gasket that had been holding it togther.
My question is, A) Is there any reason replacing the fuel filter might have caused the truck to start acting this way? B) Is there anything else that would be causing the Carb to leak? Is it most likey the gasket or am I maybe flooding it and this is why it's leaking. C) Can I just replace this gasket or should I have the whole carb rebuilt? It had been running just fine up until now.
I checked for kinks in the fuel lines and leaks in the hoses from the filter etc. Could I have maybe knocked a vacum hose loose or something and thats causing it to choke and sputter, etc?
I'm thinking maybe that the gas is leaking just becasue I'm pumping it so much to keep it running
but something else is causing it to not run correctly?
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks...

If I were you I would go with a rebuild kit for the carb. They are fairly cheap. If that doesnt work I would go with a new carb all together. After all, it's an 87 V6. The carb is constantly handling fuel. It's not going to last forever. I could simply be it's time.
