Subject: optimal highway milage? IP: Logged
Message: I'm planning a trip from Ottawa Canada to florida in my 3.9L 5spd RC. Its something like 2555Km one way. Whats the best cruising speed/Rpm range for optimal highway fuel milage?
Also approx how far can you go once the low fuel light comes on?

Message: I'm fairly certain that you can go for several miles on the low fuel light(vehicle performance may vary). My concern is that the in tank electric fuel pump uses the remaining fuel to keep it cool and with a low fuel it could shorten the pump's life expectancy. I'm assuming that you have a gen III, I'm not sure as to the best cruising speed. One thing that seems to help is having a bed cover on your truck, this wouldn't work if you were carrying stuff that didn't fit under the rails. The lower the rpms the better.

Message: First to Mr hmmmm f**k off I did a number of searches on this and didn't find what I was looking for.
Yeah your right I do have a gen III and I do have a tonneau cover. Thats what I had already suspected about the highway milage. but was hoping someone had numbers. the fuel pump getting hot makes sense, maybe I'll bring a gas can with me and see how far I get next time.
Thanx

Message: The best I've gotten on a long highway trip is 18.85 mpg. At 70mph. It seems that many poeple get a wide range of mpg on these trucks.Fuel capacity 22 gal.(?) that leaves 4 gal. when my fuel light comes on.

Message: just made a week end road trip with my dakota and i did check my fuel mileage. 22.8 outta the first tank and 23.18 out of the second. i have a '99 regular cab 2wd short box sport model. it has 3.55 gears and an automatic transmission, 225/75r/15" good year wranglers on it, with the 3.9 engine. interestingly, i do have a cover on the box. i generally run the posted speed limit. my dakota turns about 2100-2200 rpm's at 70 mph.

Message: I've read that for every 5 mph over 60 mph you go, it's like paying an extra $.50 per gallon of gas... dunno what the reasons are though. Wind resistance maybe? But from that statement it sounds like 60 mph is optimal.

Message: I believe that the average best speed (does that make sence) is about 55-60 MPH. That is why the government lowered the speed limit to 55 in the 80's. Yes your engine does turn more RPM's at 60 than 55 generally and that was a reason, but most cars run the most efficient at 55. I have read this somewhere but can't remember. I have also heard that running anything above 70 will dramatically lower your MPG. There are some people who will argue that it does not, but these are averages and so on. I know from experience that 55 is the best speed for me. (3.9 with a few mods) I can get about 23-24 MPG at 55 and only 22 or so at 60-65. I laugh at those that drive 80 past me on the highway. Yes you will get there faster, but you take a harder hit in the wallet. Whatever floats your boat, but for me, I want the gas mileage over the few shorter minutes.

Message: the correct answer for what is the optimal speed for highest milage is: the speed at which the transmission can be placed in the highest gear set and not bog the engine, in an automatic that is around 42 or 43 mph and is also the speed at which the torque converter totally locks up. Any faster and the milage goes down.most likey about the same speed for a 5 speed manual eh?
