Once again, I'm stuggling with my 87 Dakota 3.9 to pass emissions in Colorado. I'm just a little high on CO. A couple of questions:
1. Does anyone know if there is a 'high-altitude kit'?
2. What is the right timing for high-altitude? the hood stickers says low-altitude, 7 degrees BTC.

THANKS ALL

Try using Techron as well as premium fuell. Usually the Dakota that comes up to my dad's inspection station in Pennsylvania fails on hydrocarbon emissions. Also, I would guess plugs, wires etc. if the techron doesn't work.

OK, I managed to get it to pass. For those in a simular situation, here's what I did:

1. Adjusted the float level - it's not clear that the float level was significantly out-of-spec, but I tinkered with it quite a bit to make sure it was dead-on at 9/32".
2. Changed the plugs - bought Bosch Platunums, gapped at .035". The ones that were replaced did not seem significantly dirty or worn (Champion).
3. Oil/Filer change - nothing special, FRAM and Pennzoil.
4. Checked the timing (no adjustment, right on at 7 degrees BDC), idle speed (by ear at 700RPM or so).
5. Changed the air filter.
6. Per someone's suggestion on this board, I removed the baffle in front of the air intake that is located behind the grill in an attempt to give the engine more air.

My CO spec went from 32 (I think the metric is grams per minute g/m)to 21 (30 is passing). The truck has never run better. A couple of other factors were that I made sure I drove the truck at highway speeds for about 20 - 30 minutes prior to the test, and as luck would have it, the ambient temperature was around 15 degrees cooler for the re-test.

BTW, is anyone needs a carb-kit for the Holly 2-barrel, super cheap, please let me know.
