Subject: '88 Dakota Sport...drop in a new 3.9? IP: Logged
Message: I have an '88 Dakota Sport 3.9L V6 (Carburated). The truck has 172k miles on it and as a teen, im always up for more power because this thing just dosent do it for me anymore. I've heard the new 3.9s are smokin' and I think I'd like to step up. I think it has an A-500 transmission (4 speed auto with overdrive). It's 2WD and completely stock.
Does anybody know how hard it would be to do an engine swap? And how much it would cost? Or if anybody has any other ideas. I should probably mention that I plan on lifting the truck to turn into a PreRunner.

Message: Probably better to save your dough
for a newer complete truck ??
The newer 3.9's will fit OK
BUT with fuel injection comes a lot of wiring
sensors in exhaust and mainly a ECM
( Electronic Control Module ) with about
40 connections to it depending on year.
So, unless you want to totally rewire the
entire truck and about $ 400.00 in sensors alone
and $ 500.00 for ECM ??????

Message: hey i gotan 88 dakota, i have done a lot of serious mods including a garrett t20 turbo ecm reprogram, heads shaved ported and polished, custom ground cam, blueprinted and balanced crank, forged piston rods wiseco pistons and rings, titanium pushrods, three angle valve jobs, modified throttle body, custom intercooler.
It will spank a supercharged 3.9 magnum in a heartbeat.
its all about how you get the power to the ground.
my next mod is going to be boing the block out to a 340 or 360 piston size.
Just cause itsnewer doesn't mean its faster

Message: Hickster,
I've got a 3.9 completely rebuilt with 4000 miles on the motor and a 5 speed that has about 2000 miles on it. It comes with the complete truck for $2000. The body is shot. Did a couple of 360s thru the ditch and tagged all the corners. If you want more info email me at fireball_700@hotmail.com.

Message: Well, I'd like to have this engine rebuilt, and if I made it fuel injected, if it was possible. All I would have to do is bolt on new headers right? And redo all my electrical? But I figured dropping in a new engine would be easier, and maybe cheaper.
