Subject: Is my truck running rich? IP: Logged
Message: I have a lot of black soot and when I pull the plugs they stick like they just got taked out of a gas can...
I have the 180 t-stat which has been there a while and upgraded the exhaust a while back also to a car sound cat and magnaflow muffler...
One o2 sens was changed when it failed and caused the truck to dawg out on the highway...
I am gonna switch the t-stat back to 195 and clean the plugs 3923's...
Any help? Should I try to clean the injectors or something up in that area?

Message: Make one change at a time so you can diagnose the problem... I'd try the plugs first. I think that may be it. Too cold for the engine. I just switched to the AP3923's not too long ago and they aren't burning tan at all. They have a lot of soot on em as well. I'm betting if you just changed the plugs, they'll burn right. Dan (DaffyDak) has mentioned he's having great luck with the Splitfire plugs.

Message: I have two sets of 3923 and a new set of regular platinum plugs... Also some older stock value plugs... the plugs do not look bad at all just smell bad...
I take them out clean them good and regap them and place them back in... I will try the platinums again and which still had the extra soot and gas smell and new t-stat... then give it a week or tank of gas and pull them and then clean reinstall and run some gas treatment or fuel injector cleaner in the gas and check them again after that tank is gone...
Good or bad plan?

Message: My 93 gets horrid gas mileage, (16 highway) and i think it runs rich too. i put in the 3923's and felt the difference in low end power, but no change in mileage. what other conditions could be causing my richness?

Message: Another reason for soot on your plugs is insufficient air flow or a dirty air filter.

Message: Ok, got a stock 195 themostat in and reinstalled the factory heat autolite platinum plugs...
Wow, the temp sits right under 200 now what a big change. Guess it has been a long time since I put the 180 in there...
Hopefully I will notice a diff after this tank of gas..

Message: So far the truck is running ok, less smell from the exhaust. Have noticed a loss in power but not too bad... Also have a small exhaust leak at the joint where the stock headers meet the exhaust pipe.

Message: I don't know if its the splitfires, or just the normal heat range that improved things for me... it runs alot better though. better throttle response, easier starting, and much better accelleraton under tq converter lockup....

Message: As I have said many times all trucks react diff to
the diff mods,
The colder plug will run good in some stock to
lightly moded trucks.
Once the intake side is moded out
cold air
bigger throttle body
1.7 rocker arms
Or installing an MSD system
That is the time to check plugs and play with heat
ranges and gap form stock to + .010 with the
factory ignition
Once you start getting a bigger charge into the
cyl that is when things will change and the colder
plug will be needed
Another thing, the obd 2 systems around 98 and newer
stock or near stock a lot of these will not react
well to the colder plug.
What you need to do is read your plugs and make
changes untill they run tan color, It is well
worth the time it takes to get the cyl temps right
than you will see better performance and gas
mileage, to cold or to hot is not good for either
You must also be sure all your sensors are working
properly
o2
engine temp
IAT in coming air temp
MAP
These control the air/fuel ratio and how much gas
is added to the mixture by the injector pulse
width and ignition timing, any bad and you can
try plugs until you turn blue and never get it
to run good
Good wires and cap and rotor before you even start
playing with the plugs all these things need to
be checked
Factory ignition
reg chrome nickle plugs
.035 to .040
Platnium tip .040 .045
With aftermarket ign MSD
reg plugs up to .050
plat tip up to .060
This is a starting point than you fine tune for
each truck
Slit fires run good in these motors, I ran a set
at .055 with the MSD system in my last dak for
70,000 miles and it always ran good.
Autolight
split fire
and the champs all run good once you get the right
heat range and gap your set

Message: Thanks guys... Always helpful...
I replaced the cap with a borg warner and new JBZ 9mm plug wires... K&N filter, upgraded exhaust...
I also had to replace one of the 02 sensors about a year ago... I think for now I just wanted that smell to go away because I take it for SPL comps and dont want to choke people in the lanes... hehehe

since ur letting some exhaust escape it could be getting a reading that would make it richen it up a little cause it not monitoring all the exhaust

Message: Yeah, the leak is minor and only been around for a month or so. I was able to tighten the joint once but not this last time. The truck has been running rich for over a year so I would not attribute the small leak to the problem. However it could be the cause to some low end performance loss...
