Subject: Rear end & shift kit & piston ring IP: Logged
Message: Could someone please explain to me about switching rear ends to get more power, and also can you get like shift kits or torque converters for automatic tranny's. I have 1990 dakota extended cab 3.9.
I also would like to know if anyone knows where i can get a ring set i think it would come with the main bearings right???? preferably in Canada but anywhere would do!

Message: Try summitracing.com maybe they ship to canada they have a fine selection of richmond gears. By the way it is called the pinion and not the piston, lol.
As far as an install kit for your gears you can buy this but gear shops also have these on hand. I wouldn't try installing my own gears without all the proper tools and some experience.
Going to a higher gear, up to a point can improve performance by making it easier on the engine to get your truck moving. It's a fine line like a spoiler. Just the right amount keeps you firmly on the ground but too much causes drag. With a gear increase you may be fighting the gas mileage monster depending how high you go. I went from the stock 3.55 to 3.92 with no change in mpg. The truck gets up and scoots a little faster off the line.
Summit also has shift kits and torque converters. Maybe a 2500 stall speed would be good for you.
