Subject: i need some advice on repairs

has any one ever changed a belt tensioner on there dakota..i had to change my water pump the other day and after i got every thing back on and put the belt back on it had some slack in it..i didnt like the way it was but i took it for a test drive any way..and not two minutes afer driving it a red light cam on that said GEN <--what does that mean? also my truck is a 96..i would appreciate any help...

Message:
Make sure you retightened your tensioner pulley after changing belts. Mine doesn't spring back, it stays in place loosened until retightened. There is a alignment mark on the tensioner and the bracket. You line these marks back up and it is tight.
