Subject: Which Flowmaster. IP: Logged
Message: I know this has been covered over and over, but I am a little confused. With the flowmaster, should I get center in/center out. Or do I have to get an offset. And if I stay with a single pipe, should I get the 3 in. muffler, or run a 3" pipe out of the 2.5 in. muffler. Thanks.

Message: Why Flowmaster? Go Dynomax. As far as what style offset/
center etc. get under your truck and look at what you have now.
On my 99 I need a offset in and a center out so yours may vary.
Unless supercharging you should stay with 2 1/2" in and if using
a single pipe out then 2 1/2" out, if using dual outs then 2 1/4".
If supercharging then use 3" in and out since you would need
extra flow.

Message: I looked at the muffler under my truck and its cocked in there. It doesn't look right at all so I can't tell what I need. This is the one thing I don't understand, if you can run dual 2 1/4 openings, why not 1 3 in pipe off of a 2.5 outlet. Same set up as R/T and one post said he put an R/t exhaust on his six and had no problem. No dynomax because I don't want dynomax, no real reason other than that.

Message: a single 3 inch pipe flows a LOT more then a 2 1/2 pipe does, anything bigger then 2 1/2 will cause a great loss of power at speeds under 2000 or so rpm even dual 2 1/4 pipes are too big, a 1 1/4 pipe flows 1/4 of a 2 1/2 so you really don't want to go much bigger then a 1 7/8 outlet for street use. do the Math, area of a circle is pi(r)squared.

putting the right exhaust system on a vehicle be so much trial
and error? Ugh.
jcham are you running the stock muffler right now?

Message: Slopehead, everyone runs the dual 2 1/4 setup and had no poblem. You're the first person I have heard say that it is too big. Another Mark, I have a cold air intake and a v8 TB, wich is why I am upgrading exhaust. BTW if the center inlet works for the people running duals, why would anyone need an offset for single in single out muffs.

Message: of u want the dual outlet flowmaster get it. u dont have to pupe 3 inch from the cat, the muffler shop can put a reducer on the muffler. the dual 2 1/2 pipes comin out of it will b just fine, no prob at all. and for all those who question the 3 inch exhaust um, why was 92/beginning of 93 the 3.9 the fastest v6 mag?? o yea bigger manifolds and a 3 inch exhuast

Message: jcahm I also have the K&N FIPK and the F&B throttle body and as
someone who has a 3" set up now I can tell you that's not the
way to go unless supercharging I lost some bottom end on that.
I've put off my supercharger project (to build a project car
instead) and am going to a 2 1/2" main pipe from the cat with a
new Dynomax offset 2 1/2" in and center 2 1/2" out. I guess
you could have a center in as well on the muffler why have to
make bends in a pipe if you don't need to? I guess the shop I
originally went to years ago didn't have a center in muffler in
stock and threw an offset in instead and had to now bend a pipe
to match it.

Message: im really not seeing why this 3inch muffler thing is so hard. the kid wants a flowmaster single in dual out. they dont come any smaller then 3 inch inlets. him putting a reducter on the inlet of the muffler will not cause him to lose anything. since its a dual outlet the ehxuast pulses would be fighting against eachother on the way out causing alittle more back pressure to build. besides its a flowmaster it doesent flow for $hit anyways.

Message: I just had a Flowmaster single 2.5" in dual 2.25"
out installed on my 3.9, it was the 50 series SUV,
and it sounds good. Flowmaster catalog lists single
2.5" in for almost every model of muffler they make.
Their catalog also lists size of mufflers in/outs
recomended for size of motors vs. H.P. . For our
motors up to 200 H.P. they recommend (if dual out)
a 2" dual out, and up to 250H.P. a 2.25 dual out.

Message: Thanks for all of the input. To clear things up, I don't want duals, I prefer a single pipe. I would say the best decision is to stick with the 2.5 in outlet. Duals are just 1 more tip to crush when using my truck. I am not planning on supercharging, and it seems that 2.5 is plenty of an opening to expell my exhaust. Once again, thanks for all the info guys.
