Subject: Overdrive switch IP: Logged
Message: Hey, I was wondering how hard it is and what are the steps involved in replacing the overdrive on/off switch in my truck. 1997 3.9L club cab The switch does not do anything in my vehicle. I am assuming that the switch is bad, but really have no proof that the actual switch is the problem. Also, does Autozone carry the switch? I lightly browsed their site without much luck.
Thanks for any help guys.

Message: Speedo is fine, never have slammed on the brakes to test the ABS. Also I don't know to check for codes on this vehicle....can you help me there? Also the O/D seems to work fine. I know it is shifting into overdrive becuase I am pulling like 1700rpm at 55-60 (roughly, not sure exactly).

Message: Just get the switch at the dealer if you can't find it at your typical auto parts store. I can't believe it's more complex than a pull it out of the shifter handle and replace it job.

Message: ABS is fine, speedo is fine. Also, when I turn the ignition on, the O/D off light does not come on. I do not know if it is supposed to come at startup though or not.
Since I need to check for codes, what is the proper procedure for doing this?

Message: it DOES NOT come on at start up. to test it when driving down the road, just push it in. A light will come on in the dash that says "O/D off" if it is not working it will not code, so you cannot check for it, however a scan tool can see if it is sending a signal to the PCM if it is working. not an auto parts store item.

Message: well it is quite the switch. I have called a few auto places trany shops and well nothing. much the same problems as here our o/d engages but does not stay engaged. the switch will actually come out and says on it that o/d is off this is on a 1995 v6magnum automatic dodge dakota. the truck runs great other than that not a single other problem the tranny shop suggested checking for wiring problems with or changing the button(on dash button) but then again here it says it is the sending parts well like the other person said shall check out everything.Again!

Message: I just got a 92 dodge dakota. On the dash it has a
button that that says od above the headlight switch.
I push it and it lights up and reads off. I am not
sure what it is for or what it does. If anybody can
tell me what it is used for and what it does I would
appreciate it. Also I am not sure if it is on when
it lights up or if it is off when it lights up. It
says off on the switch and it seems confusing to me.
