Subject: stubborn O2 sensor IP: Logged
Message: Does anyone have any great tips for removing a stubborn O2 sensor? It's been on there for 9 years! I tried a 7/8 open end and it spins over the sensor. there doesn't appear to be enough room for an O2 socket. how about a pipe wrench? cut the wires and box end it? what if that doesn't work??

Message: spray with some penetrating oil, let sit a while then wrench on it
some have said letting the area warm up a bit from the engine might help after applying the oil
if that don't work then torch it off

Message: mine wont come off either, so i went to a local exhaust shop to ask for help.
they said they heat the pipe with a torch and use penetrating oil. they also said if it wont come out sometimes they have to get a new exhaust manifold! most of the time they said they can pull it out, but occasionally need to use a thread chaser to "re-thread" the hole.
my advice: make sure its bad before trying to replace a stubborn one. (mine is fine, so i gave up)
also, dont forget that if you cut the wires, and still cant get it out, you might have a bigger problem with the computer fuel/air ratio now!

Message: I always hit it with some oil, and run the vehicle for 10 minutes or so. No need for torch this way.

Message: Cynthia, you could have up to 4 O2 sensors but, if anyone with half a brain reads the codes they'll know which one needs to be changed.
You can check the codes yourself without any kind of scanner. Just turn the key on/ off/ on / off/ on within about 15 seconds and the codes will display in the odometer as PXXXX and if there are no codes or it's finished checking codes it will display Pdone.
Youc look up the codes to see what they mean here: http://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/
Or you can just post back here with the codes.

Message: I am in process of changing the Y-Pipe.
How do you get to the connector plug on the upstream sensors. I have dropped the cross member to lower the motor and still can't get to them.
