Subject: Timing Chain Install: Degree my cam? IP: Logged
Message: I'm replacing my timing chain and tensoner this weekend on my 93 3.9. I will be following J&J Auto's (Larry) tutorial on how to change this. I have some questions in regards to the cam degreeing.
I'm nervous about degreeing my cam. Do I really have to do this? If I want stock degree (timing) can I just put the new timing gears on such that the marks line up? Do I need to worry about getting the tools to degree my cam and possibly install offset bushing pins? Can I just put my stock offset pin back in?
I'm just curious if I can install this on my own without having to worry about degreeing the cam. Should I do this?
Thanks,
Nathan

Message: I did degree my cam and it was of by 2.
I used a set of offset keys from Mopar Performace.

Message: Did you advance yours 2 degrees by chance, because I know that's what Larry did and that's exactly what I found to be the best as well... So maybe all magnum cams need to be advanced 2 degrees???
It's easier to do if you don't think too hard on it... All I used was a visual kinda homemade setup just to see if the valves were opening right with the piston possition... And keep in mind the dots will never change on the gears, and you almost have to think backwards as far as how you put in your cam keyway...
You can use stock timing, but more power will be developed with proper cam degreeing...

Message: just line up the TDC mark on the damper than pull
it off. Key on crank is also 0 mark so if you
do turn it you can just hold the cover up there
and line the key with the tdc mark
It does not matter if the cam mark is at 12 oclock
or 6 oclock.
As long as you install the new gears and chain the
same way as they come out
line them befor removal and reinstall same
position
Not nessasary to degree the cam, lining the dots
either way and than without turning anything
reninstall, this will also tell you if you did
get a gear that was marked wrong.
The only gears that have had the problem were the
mopar performance roller chain and sprokets some
were marked 6 degrees off.
Also if you have a crank gear with 3 keyways use
the center keyway
tensioner also recomended or you will develope
the same chain rattle

Message: wrong beeeotch, the crank key is 0 on a premag engine, on a mag motor its not, line that up as the o degree mark and timing will be waaayyyyyy off. The proper mark is a few teeth conterclockwise of where the crank key is

Message: Just wanted to say thank you to dodgedakotas.com and Larry from J and J auto. I don't think I could have changed my timing chain and gears without the help.
I just finished driving my truck after the timing and tensoner swap. The extremely loud noise from the chain has disappeared. NOw I can focus on how the engine runs and figure out other problems instead of always hearing and focusing on the terrible timing noise.
The truck is really quiet now. The bad part of the whole deal... it took 17 hours.
Thanks,
Nathan

Message: Also changed my timing chain and tensoner this weekend on my 92 Dakota with 65000 miles. The chain had so much slack you would have to see it to believe it. It took about 3.5 hours because I removed the plug wires, this part wasnt needed. The truck now has no engine noise and I miss it, yeah right. Used autoparts chain set $36.99, Tensoner update from dodge $39.95, gasket set $8, bypass hose $6 then there was oil change and top off transmission. Is there any was to reset the timing after changing the chain or does the computer do that? Good luck to all
