Hi all,

I have a 98 Dakota CC V6 (182K Miles) and lately i have been having problems. I will start it up and then i leave to go somewhere and it starts to completely die around 2000 RPMs. I stay at that position with the pedal (the complete mid range) and it just bogs right down and starts to backfire. I have to floor it to get it going. It doesnt matter what temp it is. After a long while, it decides to go away but i can feel that there is subsequently less power. I did a complete tune-up (plugs wires, pcv valve, cap rotor) and even replaced my injectors. I am still having the problem. I bought an ODBII scanner and there is nothing on the computer and wont bring anything up either. Does anyone have any suggestions??? Thank you very much for your input!

Nic J.

Some guesses... are those spark plug wires defective at all? I had a wire go bad and I couldn't tell until my truck lost half its power it seemed and started to drive horribly. I replaced in turn each wire until the problem went away. Somewhere around the boot the wire must have broken. Not to insult but, are you sure you correctly installed your wires from the cap to the plug? Possible fuel supply problem? Maybe the in-tank pump is going or the strainer/filter is clogged or a line pinched. You have enough flow for an idle, but like you said when you step on it, it dies.

I am sure that i installed everythig correctly, i had the problem before i replaced everything too. It has progressivly gotten worse. It will idle a little rough when it is on its tantrum. The only time it seems to act normal during the tantrum is when i floor it, everywhere else it acts up on me.......

Do you have a shop manual or scanner or volt meter? You could check your throttle body sensors. I would think they would throw a code if the were going or something was out of caliber. I know when a catalytic converter goes it causes a huge loss of power as it acts like a giant cork in your exhaust.

Yes , check out the TPS
key on only - should read about 0.7 at rest (idle)
then smoothly increase to about 4.0 volts at
wide open

So with the TPS, it doesnt matter how long the engine has been running or anything, right? Would my computer evenentually adjust to compensate for the "lack of throttle" but seem like it is dogging? That is almost what seems to be the problem..... Ill have to take a look at the TPS later today. Thanks.

Sounds like you got the idea.
Only other thing is possible O2 sensor
contamination , or poor connection ?
O2 sensor is just in front of cat

Actually, there are 2 O2s, one in front of cat and one in back of cat, but they wouldnt even come into the picture for a little while anyways right? They are in open loop mode when the truck is started and its just as crappy then vs. 10 minutes into a drive. But thanks for the input! When i am done with classes today, i am gonna go check the TPS, ill let you know whats up.

Catcon is most likely, with no codes showing. Try this: start it up and stuff a rag into the exhaust. If it smothers the engine and stalls out right away, it's not the catcon. If it runs nearly the same, it is.

Unless Reset - the computer will
"remember " optimum 'previously' determined
values for injection etc until the front O2
sensor comes ;online; , then it will try to
adjust according to its actions..
With the miles on your truck , if O2 has not
been recently replaced , I would say it is
overdue..- some people say it should be
replaced every 60,000 mile
Of course this will depend somewhat on how you
drive and how far each ' trip ' is.
Highway runs should be making it last longer
than just runs of a couple blocks..

hey NJ, I tend to agree with ? that you might want to look into the O2 sensor(s). Just do yourself a favor and check to make sure they are working correctly before you replave them.

Also, check your water and air temperature sensors. I've heard instances where these can be the culprits, and their relatively cheap to replace.

This is just a question, which injectors did you replace yours with? Did you use the Ford 19lb? Also did you check your injector sync when you put the new injectors in?

As a matter of fact, i did replace it with the ford injectors. Everything went in fine. It has nothing to do with the injectors tho b/c it was doing it before i replaced the injectors. I took it to a place today and boggled their minds. I am taking it back tomorrow b/c they are having someone else come out and take a look at it. Thank you very much for all the help and hopefully between all your inputs and the shops, i can get this problem fixed!
