Subject: 3.9 Carb Float?
IP: Logged

Message:
Is the float in the '87 carb made from neoprene or brass or something that doesnt soak up fuel? I bought an '87 with 56k miles and am trying to get the best fuel milage that I can, and will replace the float if its heavy with fuel. Thanks

Changing out the float won't do anything for fuel millage. Unless it is fuel soaked, which I doubt, the float has very little to do with fuel delivery other than the height setting too high or low. Basically the float determinds the fuel level in the carb body. The main jets determind how much fuel is delivered based on throttle opening, hence airflow through the carb. Reading the spark plugs will be a more accurate way to tell if the jets are sized correctly. Now before you decide to change to smaller jets, remember you can go too small, lean out the motor and cook some valves and pistons. As L stated, do a tune up, check little things like tire pressure and look at you driving style.

most foam type carb floats start absorbing fuel from the moment they first come in contact with it. After 3 or 4 years they need to be replaced as they have become so fuel soaked that they are indeed heavy and then keep the needle valve open too long and too much fuel goes into the bowl. replace them with whatever you can find at your local autoprts store, as it will indeed help your fuel milage. I had a 76 duster slant 6 that i could not get more then 8 MPG out of weather city or hiway, replaced the fuel float in the carb and it went up to 16 city 21 hiway. The float replacement was the only thing I did at that time. Jake to a point the main jets do determine how much fuel is used BUT if there is too much fuel trying to get threw the jet because there is too much fuel in the bowl it will run rich. Try putting a small hole in the bottom of a 2 liter bottle, then put 1 or 2 inches of water in the bottle and let it flow out. Now fill the bottle all the way, and observe the amount of water flowing, there is more due to the pressure of the water in the bottle all trying to get out of that small hole at the same time. Same thing happens in a carb with soaked floats.

The reason I was concerned about the float is because of the age of this truck. Its not giving me any problems, but I am to drive this truck quite a bit and the price of gas is starting to get a little high. I was trying to figure anything that might cause a problem because of old age, and the float came to mind. I had a 79 Cordoba that had a soaked float and the milage was horrible, not to mention that it didnt take long to foul plugs(200 miles).
By the way, My Dakota has 56k, is Blue ice, and is in excellent shape. There are NO scratches in the bed and the paint looks new. My father bought this truck new, and it has never been in salt, and I dont think it has ever even been in the rain!
