Message: Hey, Larry. I switched those AP3923's back to .40 gap cause i thought the .45 was causing pinging but i don't think it was a ping. So i put them back to .45 again and played with the TPS sensor to move it closer to .75. When i started it back up it rev'd like hell but then gradually came down to normal idle. I didn't touch the gas. I turned it off and started a couple times too. thought it was running good. took it out and now seems to have lost some power, feels almost like the truck did when the crank sensor was at factory position. Does it take a lot for the factory wires to ground out or arc? Seems like only since i messed with the plugs that it is running sluggish. I know i did not break or crack any plugs and gapped them correctly. Will resetting the computer change anything. I always hate resetting cause the truck takes so long to learn again. Also, do you feel that forcing air into the air box via tubing from the front of truck (ram air)is beneficial or can it actually make the truck run worse by forcing air in?

Message: How do the plugs look
No the colder the air the better, I ram air right
down the top through a K&N exstream top through
a hood scoop.
Once you increase the TPS voltage it will rev the
first few times you start it after 3 starts not
touching the gas it will learn the new setting
that is normal on these trucks to do that
If it runs better gaped at .040 it could very
well be the wires or a weak coil
Napa MO26 and MO28 cap and rotor same as bosch
with solid brass incerts
MSD super conductor same year dak 5.2 8.5mm
Taylor 8mm are also very good low resistance wires
This will transfer more volts to the plugs
You could also have a bad sensor should have a
scan done to be sure
Autozone I thing still will scan for free
engine temp
IAT and o2
Is it gap or the cold plug some trucks do not
react good to the colder plug untill mor mods are
done, bigger TB, 1.7's
With the MSD the spark is also hotter and the
3923's than run great
If all you have is cold air that could be the prob

Message: Larry on my 1997 Dakota V6 I have switched from the cone filter at the end of the tube to an open element K and N filter. I have played with the tps voltage increasing it till it would still run good and not increase the idle beyond factory setting. I have that setting it to .8 volts seems to work good for me. If I set it above about .85 volts the idle speed increases 300 to 500 rpm. I think I have it set as high as I can get it with out causing other problems.
By the way I have been using a 47mm Throttlebody by Sick Throttle. I found it on Ebay, Dan Radkke sells them, when he gets cores in. I have been comparing it to the 46mm fastman I had on my truck. It seems to have slightly better low end torque than the Fastman but about the same horsepower when comparing readings with a Gtech.

Sounds as if you may be letting Warm
Engine compartment air in to that K&N .
If you can rearrange setup to get outside
cooler air = improvements.. ??

Message: Look for flashover on the plug insulators. I've found that the plugs can't be pushed beyond .040" reliably without causing some flashover (unless you have a high performance set of wires, cap and coil). If you see carbon rings around the insulators, stay at .040, but new plugs would be recommended.

Message: Well, i went back over this thing again and disconnected the battery before i even started. The AP3923's are brand new, gapped them back to .40 I also made sure all the wires were seated properly on the distributor and plugs. I found that when i took the wires off, the little heads on the tips of the plugs were mostly all loose, i did tighten them too when i first put them in. I reset the TPS to an even .7 volts and ran a ram air set up straight from the front, it cant get any warm air from the engine the way it is set up. Since im looking for mostly gas mileage, im not sure if running the ram air for cooler air is gonna do that since colder air makes the truck run richer. Well, hooked the battery back up, started it, and right from the get go the engine light was on. I started several times without touching gas too. It would not go out and the truck was missing real bad. Checked all plugs again and they were fine. I reset the computer again and started and then it was fine and purred like a kitten. Guess a sensor just didn't reset itself the first time, don't know. It runs great now. I want to get wires, larry you say to get ones for a 5.2 same year right? I hate the stupid idiots that cant find crap for my truck when i go in and ask them, ther're like "you gotta go to the dealer". thanks guys
