Subject: Hey Larry, ping or u joint? IP: Logged
Message: Hey its me again larry ( about the metallica grinding sound from the engine, u said it might be the u joint), however someone sent me a link about pinging in magnum engines, and all the symptoms stated with the article were like what i was dealing with. So i was like " hey, it must be pinging" .. but then i thought about it and i know the word "ping" is what it is cuz of what pinging sounds like, and i dont think my engine is pinging, cuz it doesnt have a high pitched ping.. its more off-beat and random distorted engine noise, however i was wondering if engine ping is really pinging cuz it might just be that if my definition of pinging is wrong.... thanks a bunch, im just trying to nail this one before i do anythnig
ps (how would the brakes have to do with this? u said it might but i obviously do no know .. i was the one saying that my engine had that narly sound within the rpm range of around 1600 to 200rpms... thanks larry i aprreciate it..)

Message: oh yeah, the sound ( possible ping?) has just recently occured a lot recently, and the weather has just also recently been getting warmer for the last 3 weeks ( living in seattle, its been pretty cool here, but the last 3 weeks its keated a lot for some reason) and i was wondering if it started to make the sound recently if it was truely pinging cuz i heard hotter weatehr does this... the sound happened randomly in the winter ( but barely noticable)... also ive heard the 180 thermostat works well as well with the bad 14.7 to 1 air/gas ratio the magnums take, and how much do they run for and are the yeasy to install? thanks again

Message: grinding could be brakes
ping if it is try a set of colder plugs
champ in the 11
or autolite 3923
same gap goes for both makes of plugs
reg gap .035 .040
plat tip gap .040 .045
As the weather warms your engin will run hotter
and it may well be piston ping try the colder
plug and see what happens

Message: Yes colder plugs will reduce ping and will improve power. according to speedtweaks the autolite 3923's increased horse power about 3 or 4 hp, it's not alot, but inaddition to reduced pinging they really help. I have a 1992 4x4 5.2 that pinged in hot weather, switching to 3923's stopped the pinging.
