how much play is allowed in the universal joints before they need replacing?

that ain't u joint play that is rear end gear slop or spline slop. U-joint play would have a sloppy, wiggly, non firm in a straight line feel and would vibrate the heck out of you and your truck as the play would not allow the drive shaft to remain in a straight line as it rotates. in other words, a sloppy u-joint would allow the drive shaft to flex all over the place at one end or the other of the drive shaft, but would not allow very much excess rotation.

hey the buick is a fine car... had a 91 buick regal gs before my 04 dakota and it went through hell and still lasted 50,000+miles that i put on it and two major accidents, both of which it kicked the crap out of the other cars.
