Message: I had the same problem with my 4 wheel drive light. Here is a link to the directions to fix it:
http://www.walt-n-ingrid.com/modifications.html
With mine, I actually had to pull the entire Central Axle Disconnect and clean it, and it had some rust holes on the vacuum canister that I had to fill, but this is the best way to troubleshoot the system. Be sure to check all the vacuum lines for wear or leakage, especially where it goes under the oil filter.

Message: have you changed or checked master cyl.?
check driverside, just in front of the rear spring
front hanger, you may have a by-pass vavle here,if you do by pass this valve it can give you all kinds of problems,no brake peddle pressure,

Message: Hey!!! I have the 1989 too. Not too many of youse out there. Back to 4X4 aspect! Sometimes it gets stuck in 4-wheel drive and sometimes it wont go into 4-wheel drive. The guy I bought the truck from said it was the slave cylinder. Can I get a few thoughts on that?

Message: Hey I have a 1989 Dakota and the front drive shaft is turning but the front wheels don't engage in 4x4. I have been told that it could be several things from the front axels to the diferential. Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be?

Message: hi, my dodge was driving fine then a red light she was dead. wouldnt start, 20 min later fired back up, but wouldnt go in reverse.. so drove forward untill engine idoled down. then off. still wont go in reverse. clutch is good to my knowledge, wheels are moving backwards but short bursts then engine off. but four wheel drive moves the truck no problem backwards. fuel filter looked like it was leaking, we replaced it but broke some fuel lines.. is this going to be my problem or did i buy a can of worms?
