Subject: rattles and diffs IP: Logged
Message: I have a dodge 3.9 99 model, I live in Brasil and my portuguese isnīt up understanding what the mechanics are telling me is wrong, probably my english isnīt either.
First problem, there is a very bad rattle coming from what sounds like both sides of the front of the car when driven over bad roads or cobble stones. When you apply the brakes it stops altogether. I have been underneith lots of times with the wheels of etc and canīt find anything loose. I have also changed all the bushes, ball joints and dampers, in fact everything I can find. I stripped the front wheels to chech the bearings and found them near perfect. The rattle seems to be getting worse but still stops when the brakes are applied. I am thinking i will have to wait for something to fall off to find out whey the problem is.
Problem 2 When moving away from a standstill, there is a clunk from the rear of the car, it is just audible, and you can feel it. Once moving, it doesnīt happen again. Is this a problem with the diffī. my car has LSD fitted.
any one know anything??

Message: If I had to take a random guess, I'd have to say it does sound like your rear differential. Check your fluid level and try changing the fluid as recommended (i think with LSD you have to be sure to add some kind of extra "conditioner" or something like that?).

Message: Steve;
I had the same problems and it was the sway bar bushings. Even thought it was hard to see when looking for the problem.

Message: Iīm English, so I think some of the terms are different, the sway arm , the bar that runs along the front of the car, and is bolted to the front of the chassis by a pressed steel U shaped clamp, with a rubber bush.
I did actually change these, but I will check them again.
By the way this is a really good idea, I ahve had a lot of problems with my car since I got it from the Engine to the suspension, and it still isnīt right. The handling is now terrible, the rear tyres squeal going round very gentle corners. I have already changed the from damplers, and have now bought some rear dampers which I will change today.
I had to strip the engine right down a few months ago, as there was so much crap in the engine that the suction grid for the oil pump chocked up and I lost all my oil pressure. It has been one thing after another. The problem is getting advise in Brazil and parts are about double the priice of the parts in the states because of the import duty. If it didnīt look so great I would have off loaded it ages ago. Having spent so much money on it though I canīt face anyone else getting the benefit.
Thanks again

Message: Steve:
My rattle was not at the bushings held by the u shaped clamp but the link bushings at the ends of the bar. I could not find the correct bushing so I used the ones from my old front shocks and they solved the rattle that was driving me crazy.

Message: Ok
Iīll go and check those again.
I notice you have changed your thermostat for a lower temperature one. I did the same and it has been a big improvement.
That started with trying to find why my car was pinging (we call this pinking) Eventually found out a cover plate undernieth the air manifold was leaking and causing this. I changed the thermostat on some of the advise on this site, and as I said the pinging has stopped al together now.
When I removed the air intake manifold to replace this, I found the engine really dirty, and what started out as a small investigation turned quickly into a massive clean up operation.
I also changed my timing chain and gears as the car has 90 000 km on the clock, but the chain is so strong it wasnīt really neccessary.
By the way I have the dakota radio cassette if you know anyone who wants it, it works perfectly but I have fitted a CD player recently, I donīt wany anything for it, just to pay for shipping.
Thanks for the tips
