Subject: Extreme Power Loss IP: Logged
Message: Just wondering if anyone could tell what wrong with my truck. I have a 1990 dakota with a 3.9 and just had it rebuilt. The problem is is taht I can put the pedal to the floor and gain barely nothing for speed right away, it takes awhile. I have noticed that the transmission makes a loud whining sound and takes a while to shift out of 1st. I am also not wondering if maybe the catalytic converter isnt plugged and its creating back pressure??? Any info would help. Thanks

Message: How well does it rev in Park?
To test catcon, stuff a rag in the tailpipe at idle. If it has almost no effect on the idle, the catcon is plugged. If it causes the engine to stumble or die, the catcon is OK as far as airflow.
Sounds more like a tranny problem. Is the fluid level OK? Has it ever been changed?

Message: I would really look at the tranny. Had a different vehicle that had high miles and it did the same thing, and had to have the tranny rebuilt. It did that at first and then would not move from a stop. Had to put in park, turn off and then back on, something was blocking the filter i believe and not allowing the right amount of pressure. You don't want to be stuck out some place when that goes, if that's what it is. I hope that's not it cause of the price. What about fuel filter? Just throwing that out there. Not sure where they are located but, trouble shooting.... Hope that helps some and I'm not rambling on again...

Message: Well I took it to a mechanic and they cant seem to find out what is wrong with it. When they scan it nothing comes up. They think that maybe it is an electrical (maybe computer) problem, or even a linkage problem. Did i also mention that it roars really loudly...it sound kinda like if you had a manual trans and revved it really high before shifting. Also it has an electrical (push button) overdrive, and when it shifts into the 3rd gear it won shift out like at 100kms/h its at 3000 rpm and just keeps going??????
I also wold like to know, does anybody know where to get oversize injectors for my truck or will the v8 ones work on it???

Message: The roaring sound could be due to a stuck fan clutch...which would definitely cause a noticeable power loss. Also could be one of the solenoids in your tranny, kickdown/tv cable, TPS sensor (maybe?). I'm leaning towards a stuck fan clutch though.

Message: By fan clutch you mean the thing that bolts on to the water pump right? Cause if that what you mean, I just replaced it, so it cant be that. And as far as I know I believe the TPS was replace when we did the rebuild but I am not to sure. I kind of had a shady mechanic.
