Posted a couple weeks ago about my Dakota not starting - turns out it was the crank sensor, so now it's running again, but the MIL is now on and giving me error P0118, which is "Engine coolant temperature sensor input above the maximum acceptable
voltage (shorted high)". I have tried clearing the code with the disconnect neg., hold key to start method, but the MIL will not go out. Is that the correct way to clear the code? Is it doing the job and the sensor (or related system) is actually bad, or what?

If it is always on then its either your check
light is on because the error is always on or
your light is f ucked. BTW shutting it off will
reset the computer just fine for the MIL light.

What the F are you talking about mike? Apparently the light is still on because there is still a problem. Turning the truck off will not reset the light, are you stupid? Check engine light and MIL (malfunction indicator light) are the same f'n thing, just different names for it.

Adam, replace the coolant sensor, its next to the waterneck on the front of the intake manifold, the unplug the negative battery cable and hold the key to the start position for 30 sec. that will clear the light. As long as the condition is fixed the light will not come back on.

Ps mike kill yourself

P0118

That is a obd 2 code

The new temp sensor is only like $6 replace it.

Located down by the thermo housing in the manifold
on most you need to unbolt the A/C compresure and
lift it out of the way to get to it

Not hoses just mounting bolts or you will
discharge the system

2 wires on it the 1 on the alt side is the guage
sending unit with 1 wire

some you can get by pulling the thermo housing
like changing the thermo the are in a hard to
get to spot

You need to get this replaced because with the mil
light on for that sensor your in a limp mode and
not running of o2 and learning but running off
set tables

Well, as it turns out the problem was not the sensor itself - one of the wires had gotten up against a sharp edge (one of the brackets on the block) and had gotten cut right through. Two small connectors and high-heat wrap and the MIL is off and the temp. gauge is working again. As soon as I opened the hood and knew where to look the damage was obvious - didn't even have to unmount the compressor to get to it.

I have a 2002 dakota sport 4x4 and my check engine light just came on. i did teh on off on off on thing for the code and when i looke up that code it said that a smal leak detected in the evaporative purge system. this has to do with the vapors being vented back from the fuel tank i belive. Would a problem with the gas cap do that as in like maybe the seal is warn or i didn't put the cap on right?
