I heard about some timing advance mod for
our trucks...isnt the timing controlled by the
computer and is not to be able to adjust
manually or what...I need some input larry
sounds like another decent modification.

...OK I talked to my dad about this...and according to him he is pretty much 100% sure that our trucks have a knock sensor. In this case the computer is constantly checking out this knock sensor to see how it can have the absolute best timing. If the timing advances, so does the knock and thus the knock sensor pulls back the timing right back to where it was so that the enigne doesnt have detonation or pre-ignition..(read that in the paragraph) If your timing can be maxed out at ...lets say 50 degrees....AND your running such a high octane for your fuel...the computer cant go past 50 so this mod will help the timing even more....Our Trucks get the best timing all the time everytime....it even changes the timing if your driving and start to go up a hill...The only way you can find out if your truck isnt running to par is to hook a X Ray scanner to it and test the knock sensor while your driving it. If it goes off alot!,...then the comuter is keeping your timing is high as it will go with the octane gas you are running. Timing is set to your octane ration...if your using regular unleaded then the timing is lowered so it will not knock or ping....lower grade of fuel burns quicker and higher grade of fuel burns slower(we're talking very relative)...so if your pistion is gettting pushed down rather than hit down the timing has to advance a couple degrees to compensate for the slower burn rate of fuel....wich thus makes MORE POWER....so in this case..this mod really WONT WORK!

You are only half way there.
Yes , computer will control ,
BUT , it is not as BAD as you are thinking .
You can have PROPER ignition " advanced "
WITHOUT 'knock'
And this is what this [ mod] sets you up for......

Mike

There is no knock sensor on the dodge trucks
3.9 5.2 or 5.9

3.7 and 4.7 yes they have them.

The computer will still control the timing but
moving the crank sensor will fake the comp out to
were TDC is and the 3 to 4 degrees will be across
the entire rpm range.

Better low end and gas mileage increse are the
most noticeable from doing this but it does help
through out the entire rpm range

The mopar performance comps run 8 degrees more
timing than a stock comp

Why do you think Marty at KRC akso recomends
doing this mod

http://www.krcperformance.com/newcontent/timing.html

On your 94 if you still have the orig sensor it
has bushings and its better to buy the replacement
sensor with the all steel mount and slot the holes

I am worried about advancing too far and getting ping, but I have never heard it before. Is it one of those unmistakable things. It obviously must have a 'ping' sound to it. I am just scared of going too far and damaging the engine. I have a Ram and I know the timing curve is alread advanced a couple of degrees over the dakota computers, so I probably wouldn't go as far as 3/8 of an inch like the tweaks post says, but I just want to be sure I would recognise if I have gone too far.

One quick question...if this mod is so good
then how come factory didnt do this in this first
place...better gas mileage? more power?
Why?

Factory does these weird things to tame emissions

that is their agenda .
Or you could say they are in cahoots with

The factory does it so you can run any grade fuel
and bad fuel

If you do get any ping and that is rare just work
around it colder plug and themostat will help and
keep the timming.

It will improve performance and for Bob it will
not effect emissions actualy they will be lower
from a better burn and more eficieant running
motor

mike, you and your dad are both morons

even if you did advance the timing with a knock sensor the sensor isnt going to automatically pull the timing back out, the knock sensor detects detonation, if you advance the timing and up the octane there would be no detonation, thus no timing pulled by a knock sensor.

not all the 3.7's and 4.7's have a knock sensor either, the H) 4.7 has one but not the normal dodge 4.7

Still obviously you have no idea what your talking about hater...shut up and get a life...and yes thats what the knock sensor is to tell the computer if it is off timing...if you advance them the timing w/o increasing the octane rating i am positive it is going to make it worse...and BTW i am very well going to listen to him since he is a 25+ year ASE Master Tech...and your not...so go away dumzhit

Mike,

Try this take on it. The knock sensor can only pull timing out if it somehow 'knows' that it has been advanced. The engines comp reads the timing off of the crank position sensor. When you advance the timing, it will advance fine, knock sensor won't know the difference until you advance too far. Start to get detonation, and the knock sensor will pick it up. Then it retards the timing slightly from where it is at that point. So let's say you advance it 20 degrees, but the engine will start pinging at 17 degrees advance. The knock sensor reads that you are getting pinging, and retards until the pinging stops (ie. back down to 17). Since the comp takes its calibrated timing reading off the crank position sensor, it still thinks everything is hunky dorey. As far as the engine is concerned you have bad gas, so it just retards the timing slightly from where it is at that point. It will never know if you advance or retard it by moving the crank sensor.

Hope that clears it up for you. Go ahead and do the mod whether there is a knock sensor present or not. Won't make a difference unless you over advance. Then it will just retard it back a little for you.

hey hater
quit drinkin haterade and get off this site,
since you you know nothing about dakotas or
cars period. and also they dont put headers
on new vehicles because they dont need them
because the exhaust is already big enough.
the reason they had them on older cars is
because holes on the exhaust manifold wern't
big enough they were to small.and maybe they
didnt put in the 4.10 gears because they made
the trucks to haul. they were not designed to
race retard. any dumbass could have figured
that out. i'm sorry i gave you a compliment by
calling you a retard because you are lower
than that you fu**ing hater and also maybe
mikes truck does have a knock sensor.
