I have a 2003 clubcab sport plus Dakota 4x4. What alternator do I have and can I upgrade it? The reason I ask is sometimes the engine sounds under too much load when sitting at a light. Also I want to be able to hook up to no more than 4500lbs towing.

take my word for it, changing the alternator to a higher output won't change a thing. unless the rpm (use the tach to check it) moves up and down a lot at idle and in gear, you don't have any problems. too much load at idle at a light,,,, now i've heard everything!

Like fan said it is the fan and it's clutch.

Is it worth upgrading my altenater for towing purposes? How do some of your 3.9's handle towing say a small to midsize boat?

An alternator wont do anything for towing.....I have a 14' aluminum fishing boat and my 3.9 does ok with it. However my 17.5' Bayliner is on the verge of being too big for a V-6. Keep your current alternator. It wont do you any good to change it unless its not working
