i have a 99 sport with the 3.9..it is an OK engine..you just have to really push the engine in order to make it fun to drive..how hard can you push the engine without REALLY hurting it..i know that its not real good on an engine to run it hard all the time..and the RED LINE should be respected but does it hurt these motors to push them past red line every now and then?...I am asking this because i know that all motors are diffeant...i love to drive and push the limits of the truck often..just wondering how many other people out there like to push their kotas and how hard you run them, without blowing of course...just wondering
Phil

I run my 03 up to 4K getting onto freeways. It seems the powerband starts at about 3K. I do it almost all the time.

I just tweaked my shift kit and shift at 4600rpm
at WOT 1st really runs strong all the way up over
the set 4200 WOT shift

center port break on in gear 60psi, as soon as you
hit the throttle a little should be 100 to 130psi
this can be adjusted.

There is a spring seat in front of the presure
adjusting screw

Presure screw if RE over 2 turns need to add
resistor or it will trip gov presure code

RH no presure sensor

I always turn the presure screw 2 1/2 turns on the
42 RE & RH and than tweak 1st gear

The spring seat in front of presure screw should
be at .900 moving it .050 will solve early 1-2
shifts but do not go less than .800 or you will
lose lockup

Hard to mesure with valve body installed and some
just have a seat with no adjusting screw but you
can mesure from case with body installed and bend
in .050 to tweak low shift point, mesuring from
case to back of spring seat pin

Anyway you will hit the rev limitor long before
you cause engine damage but clean oil and reg
changes is a must don't beat the motor with dirty
old oil that needs changing

The V6 is a tough little motor

I ran my stock 3.9 (factory internals) from 37,000 to 67,000 miles off a 100 shot of nitrous running about 1 bottle a week thorugh it and constantly red-lineing it, and when i finally had the money to bulid it the way i wanted it, i did not see or find ANYTHING wrong with it when i tore it down. The block still had the factory crosshatch pattern in the cylinders from where it was honed at the factory!

Rev limiter will stop you from pushing too far. Keep in mind that the 3.9 is based on 5.2 internals, and that shortblock is good to a safe rev limit of approx. 6300rpm.
