Subject: v6 vs. v8 muffler- same part?
IP: Logged

Message:
Am I mistaken in my thinking that the muffler on a 2001 manny tranny 3.9 is the same part number as the one used on the same truck with the next gen. v8? If so, then this muffler can't be all that bad for a basically stock v6, right?
Also, does anyone know, or have any reasonable guesses as to how much worse emissions will be after removing the third catalytic converter? I have my ways of passing, but I'd just be curious to know how the truck would read with only 2 cats, as opposed to 3. Thanks

You only have One cat for single exhaust .
Two if full dual exhaust .
anything else is either muffler or resonator.
Cat / s are closest to motor

This is a 2001. There are three cats. One after each manifold, then a 3rd one at the collector. The third one does not have an O2 sensor and many people replace it with a pipe for better sound.
But I'd much rather know about the muffler used on these trucks- is it the same as the one used on the v8?

thanks, see, I am on a limited budget and I am trying to prioritize bolt-ons accordingly. Since the stock exhaust hasn't rusted off yet, I think I'm going to wait to change the muffler, since it isn't restricting the 3.9 nearly as much as it restricts the v8 engine. I've got plans for fabing up a dual muffler setup down the line, which will run off the first two cats, have a crossover pipe at the hottest point for balance, go to a pair of low output muffs, and exit behind each rear wheel. I feel the 3.9 sounds like crap no matter what muffler is used, so my idea is to make it quieter while gaining more free-flow capability than alot of performance mufflers used in single exhaust applications. It's been my experience that catalytic convertors don't do as much for emissions as most people think, so I am going to test my theory with the stock exhaust by removing the third cat before I go through inspection.
