Message: Autozone can check your codes and look them up in their database for free.
To clear your codes, you can remove the negative battery terminal for a few minutes (not sure how long), and this will reset your codes, however...
Your computer still keeps a history of codes. In order to clear them, remove both battery terminals and touch them together for 10-15 seconds. This drains the 3+/- volts from the capacitors supplying electricity to the CPU.
Your vehicle will think it's new and being started for the first time. I know it sounds strange, but that's proper procedure.

Message: If the EGR light does not clear, then it may be on a timer. quite a few vehicles used a timer to turn on the EGR light at a specified interval. On my Jeep, the book actually said to replace the timer. yeah right! how about unplug the timer! I dont know the setup on the 87
