Subject: Question about K&N Air Filter IP: Logged
Message: Ok, I have been reading the boards for a while now, and on top of the "known" repairs that I have to do to my truck, there are some upgrades that I want to do as well ('92 V6).
One of these upgrades was to add a K&N air filter to it. I have read about the "homebrew" mods, and sounds really interesting, but I have a question. I have seen that these say to get a cone filter, that ends up getting placed somewhere near the passenger headlight.
I was looking online at the filters and noticed a K&N that is circular, made to fit in the existing airhat (not sure about the terminology, piece above the TB). Seeing this, I looked at the tube coming off of the airhat on my truck, and it looks like it runs down and connects right next to the passenger headlight.
So is this configuration basically what I would get from a "homebrew cold air intake"? If so, does the cone filters get better performance than the circular filters that fit in the existing airhat?
thanks.

Message: Get the circular filter..
These " other setups " are for newer trucks
which do not have our { airhat ).
If you want even cooler air , drill some holes in
the plastic [ behind the Grille ] directly in
front of the Air Tube

Message: Go with the circular like Jak said. The "homebrew" setups you've seen liken to the K&N FIPK's (Fuel Injected Performance Kit). I've found that these kits do not work as well as advertised for the older trucks. I DO swear by K&N though. One mod I HAVE heard of for the old style filter setups like on your (and my '93) Dakota's is to put a gap between where the lid meets the body of the filter housing. Depending on the year, you can either turn your housing lid upside-down and screw it back on, or cut about 1/2" off the top of your housing so that when the wingnut is tightened down onto the filter element there is about 1/4" to 7/16" between the bottom of the lid and the top of the housing. THis gives you more airflow into your TBI. Granted, you'll be cleaning your air filter a little more often, but that's what K&N's known for: a million mile, washable filter. Hope this helps.

Message: Better to enlarge the {air tube } to the front
and maybe enlarge the [ inlet duct ] of the
( air hat ) ....
If you open it up over the engine you will let
HEATED air in = No good = increased fuel consumption with NO power gain

Message: True. BUT, if you go with a kick ass ram air hood, you wouldn't have to worry too much about hot air. The airhat thing was just another one of those 'homebrew' ideas. You may be able to retrofit a FIPK type system that would work with our dakotas. I've even heard of people re-routing their A/C to go into the intake for a little added chill to the intake air.
