Subject: Intermittent noisy lifter, ideas??
IP: Logged

Message:
My 3.9 sometimes ticks (moderately) at startup 52000+ miles.
It seems to be coming from the rearmost driver's side area. It only does this once in a great while (maybe 1 of 20 starts) the oil pressure is always past the 1/2 mark, and it runs fine otherwise. I don't know what to think if this, if the lifter were bad wouldn’t it tick all the time? It goes away as the engine warms up or is driven, regardless its got me worried…. Any insight and/or comments will certainly be appreciated.

Thanks

Use the AMSOIL engine flush and then switch over to their
synthetic oil 5w-30 or 10w-30 if you are not already doing so.

Use a good oil filter no cheap Fram

Yes the lifter in the back drivers side is the
last to get oil through the galley.

I just put a new set of performance lifters in my
92 motor and I still get some tic not right at
start but 1 min after and after 2 it goes away
but I do not have the amsoil in there yet that
will be in this week it does help.

Mine is right side front on end of oil galley

Reason, the moliclues are smaller and all the same
size and will fill the micro scratchs and hold the
oil and reduce lifter tic.

I use the origanal turbo, or the series 2000 is
a good choice but the XL7500 stay away from its
the cheap stuff made for quick change places and
is not a true synthetic.

Mine also has that cold start tick. I think I have chased it down to a broken exhaust manifold stud. Apparently a common problem for the V6 Dakotas. You may want to cehck and see of yours are all intact.

I will check the manifold stud as soon as it gets nicer out. My oil is amsoil 10w30 and my filter is Napa gold. It will do it for a long time if i idle (10-15 mins) if i tap the gas, the noise speeds up with the engine. But here’s the catch, it slows down faster than the engine. It returns to the sound it makes at idle, even though i may let off the gas at 1500. Maybe that could be an exhaust sound, I will definitely check.

thanks a bunch!

it did something new today. it didnt start with the noise until about 5 mins after the truck was started. it really sounds like metal to metal contact (not an exhaust tick) but the engine runs smooth for (a 3.9 lol)I guess i'm just going to live with it, no one seems to have any ideas i guess..... maybe i can buy some 1.7 RR to put in and set the lash manualy :-P

Did you check the exhuast studs? It would be a metal to metal contact kind of sound for sure. I am replacing one this weekend, I will let you know if it solves my tick problem.

My Dodge Dakota has a very loud ticking noise when warm but not when first started. The noise goes away with engine rpm, but when idling it sounds like a diesel. I have listend under the hood and noticed a very bad vibration coming from the distributor. It sounds like metal to metal clanking. Oil pressure is normal and only high quality oil filters are used. Please HELP!

sounds like the timing chain on yours

Yes an exhaust leak can cause a sound just like
a ticking lifter

A broken stud on stock manifolds will not leak
they are metal to metal mating surfaces with no
gasket, however a leak on the y pipe or anywhere
in front of the converter will cause a ticking sound

The stock injectors will also have a loud ticking
sound take a big screw driver or cut off broom
handle and put it on the motor and your ear
(the poor mans stethascope) and listen you will
hear all kinds of weird sounds LOL

When I bought my first mag 94 Dak I took it in and
told them I had an exhaust leak and they showed me
it was an injector clicking with less than 500
miles it was ticking loud brand new truck I was
mad thought the exhaust was leaking

I have also heard the tensioner pullys with a
loud ticking sound when cold than goes away
than its time to replace it.

could be many things sound will carrie through
a motor and throw you way off from the real
sorce of a noice you need to investigate and
pin point exactly what it is

Hey Larry, thanks for that info. I guess it is back to the figuring again for me, LOL. It may very well be my tensioner as it has been on there for about 50000 miles.

BTW, you had mentioned in a previous post about left handed drill bits to remove brokem exhaust bolts/studs. Where would someone find a set of those? I am going to try and get out there and fix that thing this weekend. Also, are there any studs that are better than the crappy stock ones? I got a replacement at the stealer today, and it looks like it could break tomorrow, LOL.

i can live with my timing chain chatter but the ticking annoys me. if i want to trade my truck in sometime, they would hear that noise and assume its a lifter (wich it could be) and give me less for it.

but now im leaning away from lifter noise and more towards exhaust noise. it dosent sound like the injectors, they make a soft barely audible click. not the realitively loud noise i'm hearing. its kind of like one of those paint marker/pen things, when you shake it thats the noise (a lil less extreme though) and its about as fast sounding as a wind up alarm clock at idle.

its hard to describe without making it sound really bad, i wouldnt hesitate to drive to cali and back in my dak :-)

How do you know if your exhaust studs are broken?

Do the heads of the bolts fall right off, or are they loose, or what?

Thanks,

I think a good metal drill bit and a screw extractor will take care of it. I will let you know soon since I am going to tackle this job myself. The stealership is the only place with the studs/bolts I know of, at least so far, but they are pretty cheap, 1-2 dollars depending. I suspect you could fix it yourself if you can change your oil and plugs, it does not look any more difficult than that. Surely any muffler shop can fix it as well, but they may try to get you to do a few more things "while they are in there".

You can get left hand drills at most hardware and
parts stores they are a common item

As far as an easy out good luck that usualy don't
work and end up drilling to size and re taping
the hole just be sure you get as close to center
and drill straight.

That is where the left hand drill comes in usualy
once you move up in drill sixe starting with a
smaller drill they will catch and screw out be
sure you run the drill in reverse using the left
hand drill

LOL LOL LOL

No your exhaust manifold will not fall of with
even 3 broken studs

Yeah i figured the manifold wouldn’t fall off LOL. maybe I will have all the studs replaced, so i don't have to worry about them any more. Do you think I should be worried about removing the heat shield from the manifold? I just jerked it out to see the extent of breakage, not even thinking of the consequences of doing so....

my engine idles quieter now (doesn’t sound like a coffee can full of rocks LOL) all I hear is a soft ticking sound from the area where the bolt broke off. What causes this to happen? Is it a design flaw, are the studs improper grade? I just want to know all angles of this issue.

Many thanks to all who responded.

now for Larry, its good to see a mechanic who doesn’t rely on a computer to diagnose engine problems. If I had taken it to the dealer, they would have said "the computer says its OK, so there’s nothing to worry about. That will be $50 for the diagnostic scope." One other question Larry. Any chance in you moving to Ohio ;-) if not I guess I could ship you my truck for any maintenance it needs LOL!!

Sorry to write a book, thanks for reading it all hehe.
