Subject: engine dies at idle speed IP: Logged
Message: hey,
im a high school student and ive had my 94 reg. cab 3.9l dakota since july of 2003. it has about 115k. it has run well the whole time ive had it, and when we first got it, my dad replaced the ignition system- the tubes and what not- sorry i dont know alot about the parts..but it was maybe 100 bucks. anyways, ive had seriously no problems whatsoever..until today. i was driving to church and it was running perfectly fine until i was in the parking lot and then all of a sudden the engine goes dead- everything is still on, but you cant accelerate. i put it back into park, turned off, turned back on, and it hardly turned on- stuttered, sputtered, and when you accelerate just a little bit- like about 800 rpm it goes dead- if you go higher- like 1500-2500, it is ok and the engine doesn't go dead. unfortuantely i had to call my dad and he came over and he looked at, and sprayed some carburator/choke cleaner and it started up but it didnt relaly solve the problem. anyways we were able to drive back home, my dad driving my truck and me driving his car. my dad tried fixing it, replaced one cracked tube, and he thinks it has to do with the fuel injector or something- lol. this really sucks, cuz i have to take the bus now to school, or try to get a ride with a friend. i dont know why my truck all of a suddden went bad- i felt so secure/truck was reliable beforehand. what do u guys think? we drove it over to a car mechanic place to get it fixed, hopefully. does it just need parts replaced.
thanks

Message: Sounds like a fuel delivery problem or a bad connection in a electrical circuit. Change the fuel filter. Easy and cheap. Check all the electrical wiring from the coil to the distributor to the plugs. Read the thread called "automatic idle speed motor."
Is the check engine light on?

Message: I have a 94 dakota also. Some of the parts i've had to replace due to the same problems, lack of transmission fluid will cause the car to die, so check that. Another problem may be your ignition coil, hall effect sensor, cap and rotor. Possibly a bad alternator. I had taken mine to dodge when it was having some of the same problems in december. Dodge only told me part of the problem. I took it to another mechanic and they diagnosed more and they replaced the parts needed. My truck has 160,000 plus miles on it. I'm not a mechanic but I've had my truck in to get repairs so from one 94 owner to another hope this helps.

Message: the mechanic said the problem was the EGP? valve- forget now the letters, but nobody in the city had the part so it has to be custom ordered and it will arrive tomorrow.
