Subject: This summer......Engine Swap! IP: Logged
Message: Well its about time to move up on
management in the fast food industry and if I
get this job...I will be having to get a Magnum
318 from 92 or 93 magnum motors. I have
heard alot about these motors to have more
than 5-10 h.p. than the newer magum 318's.
Is this true?
I want to do this right...so I need some info
about an engine swap for my 94 3.9 dakota.
What ALL do I NEED to know about this
procedure..I will be having the local salvage
yard put this in. Any suggesstions and what
kind of other nit picky things do i need to
know...will I have to change out anything huge
besides the pcm and map sensor or
what...thanks all help is appreciated.

Message: The 92's and early 93's had more aggressive cam ramp profiles, but retained the same gross valve lift. They also had larger exhaust manifolds and crossover tube that flowed better. This combined to make for a more responsive engine. A good set of headers and a more aggressive aftermarket cam would make any 318 Magnum score equally on the dyno, but the effect would be more dramatic in later engines. As for the swap, you will need the V8 computer, and will need to run a couple more wires for the extra two injectors you'll be running. Some others here have actually done this swap and can give the intricate details.

Message: Pin 17 and 18 on the comp plug need to be added
#17 is # 7 injector
#18 is # 8 injector
Just pick up a ground from exsisting injector
and it will work fine.
Or change the complete harnass
You will also need the V8 computer thats it every
thing else will bolt right in
Any 92 to 95 318 or 360 will work actually any
will as long as you use a 92 to 95 EGR intake on
the newer motors 96+
Your 42RH will also hold up and handle 300hp with
a shift kit

Message: Well I decided not to get a shift kit...b/c of hard shifting when just taking it easy....also I have heard that it took months for the tranny to go out in some engine swaps like I will have.
I am really nervous about this and would like to know if i need to get new motor mounts or if the existing ones will work?
Plus The Map sensor I heard...and what about the Flex plate on the tranny?
Any more ideas or suggestion would be appreciated.

Message: If the tranny went out in "months" it wasn't in good shape to start with, or wasn't rebuilt very well. The shift kit will improve the life of any tranny. TransGo offers multiple levels of performance. Also, the force of the shift can be adjusted with the kickdown throttle cable. You can still get hard shifts at full throttle, but mild shifts at part throttle. The flexplate from the V6 will fit the V8's. If you use a Magnum V8, it will use the same mounts and mounting points as the V6 in your '94.

Message: Well, there's a complete Magnum engine harness on eBay right now. Perfect for your application. Start looking at exhaust. You'd be wise to get larger exhaust plumbing so as to not choke the V8.

Message: Change the flex plate and bolt that puppy in
than just add the 2 injector wires or change the
harnass plug in the V8 comp and away you go.
The MAP has a diff # but is the same reading vac
and changing from about 1 to 4.8 volts for comp
signal
The shift kits do not cause harsh shifting unless
you open the 2 holes up over .100 that would
be a race aplication or very heavy street use.
I have mine tweaked and shifting at 4600 WOT and
it works great
With the stroked motor I bump that up to 5500rpm
I have trucks running the 42 trans with 360's in
front of them and they hold up fine if worried
add a trans cooler heat is what kills transmissions

Message: Is it ok to use the 3.9 torque converter on the 318?
Yes you must use the V6 flex plate that is the
plate that bolts to the crank and matchs up with
the 42's converter
When you pull the motor you must unbolt the
converter from this plate first and the conv stays
in the trans if you don't for sure you will
damage the seal and posible pump damage
The A 500 and A 518 converters do not interchange
from trans to trans
Mike either you need to add pins 17 and 18 to the
exsisting harnass and run them to the #7&8
injector and pick up a ground for other side of
injector or change the harnass
If you pull the rubber out of the comp plug you
will see they are numbered on the orange part on
the plug, the pins you would need to get from an
old harnas plug and add them to yous they are
empty spots on the V6 harnass right now

Message: So Do i need to change the flex plate or what?
And how can i get a hold of a 93 v8 comp? And
BTW will chrysler need to change my shift
points on the tranny since the torque curve is
different from the v6 one..?

Message: You cant use a v6 flex plate on a v8. The marks that the crank sensor reads are different on the v6 vs v8. With a v6 flex plate on a v8 it will not run.

Message: These engines function over the same RPM range, and since the shift points are governed primarily by the kickdown cable, no, Chrysler doesn't need to adjust anything. You can, however, adjust it if you feel it needs it.
