Message: to start your on board diagnostics if you have them, cycle the ignition switch On-off-on-off-on within 5 seconds. your check engine lamp will begin flashing, the first set of flashes is the first number of your trouble code, the second set of flashes is the second number of your trouble code, there will be a pause between flashes, keep counting the flashes, when the diagnostics are done you will get a set of 5 flashes and then another set of 5 flashes, This is based on my 94 but I think it will work the same. I have a list of codes if you get any. Dont be surprised if you only get 5,5 because my car stalls and gives me that code every time. hope this helps

Message: If you have a digital odometer, when doing this test the codes will display where your odometer is. When all codes are diaplyed, it will read PDONE. You can find the codes at allpars.com (I think that is the site) or call your locall parts house, like AutoZone, and they should be able to decipher what your codes mean.

Message: you buddy is an idiot "my buddy was saying somthing about a diagnostic connecter that i have to jumper out" not in a Mopar, never only on the domestic competition.
to get codes,
insert key in ignition
turn to run
turn to off
turn to run
turn to off
turn to on
leave on!
watch dash board, lights will either blink out codes or odometer will speel out codes.
if blinking:
'''''pause'''''
(') indicates individual blink, count them
''''' pause ''''' indicates code 55 or end of message
''pause '''''' indicates code 26 ( whatever that means, due to the year of your truck most likely it will be an odometer display of either 2 numbers or a P0000 code
xmr, not if you do it right!

Message: Hi All,
Just to bring some closure to this thread, in 1998 the Dakota
onboard diagnosis (OBD) system switched from OBD-I to OBD-II.
The On-Off-On-Off-On protocol works with OBD-I systems
(coincidentally, '96, and '97 Dakotas support both OBD-I and
-II).
For '98 and newer Dakotas, you must use an OBD-II compliant
scanner to get the error codes. The OBD-II protocol is standard
across manufacturers and the interface is a 16-pin female
connector, usually located beneath the steering column.
HTH,

Message: Hi Again,
Quick follow-up.
In 2000 Dodge re-introduced support for the ODB-I protocol.
Therefore, only the '98 and '99 models do not have support for
OBD-I.

Message: Some of the 99 codes can be read by doing this:
http://www.speedtweaks.ca/tipsandtricks.php#1999mil
But it looks like most require the use of a scanner.

Message: spend the money on the scanner not just for its trouble code
reading ability but it's ability to check your sensors and grab
snapshots of driving performance and to reset the check engine
light when you fix something, it's really worth it and gives me
great peace of mind
