 Subject: BADDDD grinding/groaning noise, A500 A/T

My 92' with the A500 tranny started making this very odd, rather scary and irritating noise when in reverse... it shifts great and very very firm through all the gears, but in reverse, when you give it some throttle, she makes this loud groan/grinding noise...
someone told me its a hydraulic pump of a sort in the tranny going bad... but i dont see how, when it still shifts and runs as nice as it does (i only get the occaisional 3-4,4-3,3-4 surging... but im going to fix that with a trans-go)
whats going on, and do i have anything to worry about?
