Subject: 180 Thermostat for 3.9 IP: Logged
Message: Yes, I am kicking a dead horse, and yes i did a sreach for 180 t-stats but didn't find any info for the 3.9, just mainly the 4.7. Im sure that there is no difference, but want to be sure. Where can I get a 180 t-stat for a '98 3.9 and part number? How hard are they to put on? From what I saw it was just a few minutes. Thanks for any help in advance.

Message: You actually lost mileage? Wow first time I've heard any post that. Any auto parts store will have it. Easy to take off, a little tricky to get the waterneck and gasket to align with the hose clamped to it so you can put the bolts in. If you do do it, ditch those lousy factory hose clamps and put normal ones on, it will make it much easier. Hardest part is scrapping all the old gasket material off the manifold because of how little room you have to work in.

Message: i lost 2 mpg with the 180 t-stat.
if the computer reads the temp to be less than 195 it richens up the fuel mixture.
i drive 100 miles a day to work so i track my mileage every day to see if im still getting the best i can.
my 98 3.9l rc, auto trans, with 3.55 rears gets 22mpg at every fillup.
thing i have done are,
tonneau cover
bosh plat 4 plugs
brass cap and rotor
electric fan(remove belt fan)
synth oil in engine and rear
40 psi in tires
trans cooler kit
and drive like im 39 not 19.
it is a truck with the aerodynamics of a brick, dont expect alot.
i would like to take a poll of anyone who has done the 180 t-stat swap to see if they also lost 1-2 mpg.

Message: Thanks for all the info, guess that's a negative on the 180 t-stat. Glad that you all are all here! haha. Yes, How do you like your Trans cooler? I have been looking at one. I don't have one one but am looking. are they hard to put on? I read some postings that said yes and some no, if not what kind and where did you get it? I don't tow any, just drive back and forth from home to college on some weekends, but i know heat is a major enemy of the tranny. thanks!

Syn Fluids Everywhere(ATF+4)

I have gotten 18-20 mpg since new and nothing has changed. I have done all my mods in steps, so I have been able to track the power/mpg improvement.
After the 180* stat and the #4417 plugs, my slight ping has gone completely away.
For me, 18-20mpg is as good or as bad as it gets, regardless of the mods.

Message: oh i forgot i also have a k&n drop in filter and a twin tailpipe catback system.
the trans cooler took about 45 min to install.
i cut the hardline on the return side with a dremel and fastened the cooler to the left side of the condenser(front in middle)with the supplyed hardware(use the foam pads)ran the rubber tubeing through the left side of the frontend and used 2 hose clamps on each fitting to attach.
i did the trans cooler just for piece of mind.

Message: I have been running a 180 stat for over a year now. Took a 2 mpg drop when I installed it. Performance was good. Put in a Jet Stag II Chip and performance stayed the same but the mpg jumped up by 5 mpg. With my current mods of
v8 TB, 1.7 Roller rockers, Modified Intake manifold, FMS 19# injectors, Underdrive pulley, Black Magic 150 electric fan, Accel super coil and MSD-6a, taylor 8mm plug wires, autolite 3923 plugs, 180 degree tstat with Jet stage II chip, JBA Headers and a flowmaster single in/dual out, I get 19-20 mpg around town and 22-24 highway driving.
