Subject: Gas Mileage? IP: Logged
Message: I have an 02 3.9 cc, and it doesn't matter if I am driving on the highway or on back roads, I never get more than 15 mpg. I can get around 15 if I baby it and lay off the gas, and if I drive normal i get closer to 13. Am I getting that much less than everyone else (on another post a guy said he gets 19 to 20 mpg, I would kill for that)? I ordered a tonneau cover for the bed, but other than that what could I do to improve my milage?

Message: Hey I have a 97 Dak Sport. No matter where I am driving I get about 13mpg! On the highway I am lucky if I get 15mpg! I have a hard cover on my truck and I have a less restrictive exhaust. You would think that with the combination of these two my mileage would be better... But its not. I would also kill for anything better than 16mpg!!!!

Message: I was just thinking... I have a 22 gallon tank. This past full tank I got about 150-170miles to the FIRST half tank. Then one it got down to about 1/2 tank my gas just gets sucked out! Right now I am at a 1/4 of a tank and I only have about 195miles on the tank. So this is how it goes...
3/4 full ......................... 90miles
1/2 tank ......................... 150-170miles
1/4 full ......................... 190miles
1/8 tank (gas light on)........... 215-225miles
There is a huge drop off after 1/2 a tank. Does anyone else have this problem? LET ME KNOW!

Message: one = gauge is Not Linear
You have to use fiil-up gallons and milage
two , something Not up to snuff if you
can't get closer to 20 on highway runs .
City is hard especially if a lot of stop and stop
and go....
see mods re 180 therm and cold air intake

Message: Brook, mine is also an '02. All I've done to it is a K&N drop-in, and I'm running synthetic oil. Around town, I get 15-17. If it's all in town, I'll be back at the pump at 250 miles. I DID finally learn how to get the darned thing to drop into OD at less than 45mph. Stop and go with this thing is murder on the mpg. Unfortunately, there's not very many places where it stays in OD for more than just a minute before I gotta stop for the next light.
Highway, I've seen as high as 24.3, but usually it's 21-22 - just depends on how hard I'm running it.
Once the warranty is up (another 2K or so), I'm dropping in an MSD-6A. It's also due for an oil change and I plan to replace it all with Amsoil (I already got the catalog, Steve). I DID see about a 1mpg increase when I put Mobil-1 in it a while back, and I'd expect the Amsoil to keep that. A lot of the other mod's are good for performance, but not so good for mpg - and it performs just fine for me without the other stuff.

Message: Try a K&N air filter. It has improved fuel mileage in the past. It is more expensive than paper but all you have to do is clean it once in a while. You'll save the cost of replacing paper ones every time. If you do take it to get worked on with a K&N for oil changes or whatever, make sure you let the workers know the air filter is not paper. When mine was put on the 94 my fuel mileage went up at least one mile to the gallon, and I had 116,000 miles on it.

Message: I get about 13.5 on average. This is mixed driving. So about
240 miles per tank on my 22gal. I have a 99 3.9 auto. I have
the K&N FIPK, JBA headers, MSD 6A, less restrictive exhaust,
hard cover on the bed and 180 thermostat and electric fan.
Maybe I'll look at swapping out those old O2 sensors.

Message: ~13-15 MPG city driving.
~20-21 on the highway @ 70 MPH. I have a vinyl cover. Dual exit exhaust and high flow muffler. I removed the plate at the air intake hose.
Most I ever got was 28 MPG!! Driving @ 60-65 MPH.
Now if I could get the torque converter to lock in 3rd gear the milage would go up. GM got it right with the 82-84 trucks. The torque converter locks in third gear. My V-8 in my other truck gets the same gas milage if not better than my V-6 in the city. Only because the torque converter locks in third. Why did Dodge unlock the torque converter to 55 MPH??? WTF?? Now at least the new truck shift into OD at lower speeds.

My torque converter locks up at 35-40 mph under light load on level ground.

Message: I have a '91 3.9 V-6 5-speed long-bed and get as bad as 14 mpg city in winter, ave of 15-16 mostly in town and 18-20 highway, mainly 19 mpg on the highway. No mods and no cover over the bed (camper or otherwise). Seems about what others are gettting, have heard of some getting 22-24 highway? Wow, that would be something.

Message: I have a modified V6. Back and forth to work I get (as of last tankfull) 16.2, highway I get 21 or better depending on right foot cramps. I don't baby the truck. I do use Amsoil products throughout. Motor, trans, rear end, power steering. I think that using the synthetic products, keeping the tires inflated right, and a good tuneup really help.
