Subject: Black smoke?? IP: Logged
Message: Hi, I have a 1993 dakota with the 3.9L V-6.
When I start my truck it blows black smoke out of the exhaust. Then it almost quits until it builds some revs and then it will stay running. Then after a few seconds it turns to blue smoke. Everytime I rev on it,it will blow black smoke again. Whats wrong. Thanks for any help.

Message: black smoke= too much choke at start up
black smoke= runnin way too rich
blue smoke= oil from cylinder walls being washed off by too much gasoline in cylinder, then burning off and causing scoring in cylinder
blue smoke= bad valve seals
blue smoke=bad rings
start looking there, then there are a few other places that happen less from

Message: I'd start with the MAP sensor, then the O2 sensor. Make sure to disconnect the battery when replacing these parts so the computer will reset and see the new parts when you start up.
