Subject: V6 Not Charging IP: Logged
Message: Alright I've had this problem for about 3 months now and I'm sick of chargeing 3 batterys before i can go to bed every night.
One day my truck stopped chargeing (gauge dropped to around 12V) so I went and bought a new alt. and battery at the same time, cause I didnt know how good either was. Well that didnt fix my problem. Autozone said the voltage regulator was inside the ecu, so I replaced that, no luck still. I have had the alt. off the truck and tested many times even long tests to make sure it wasnt just chargeing on initial loads only. So heres what I got new alt., new battery, new ecu. I have run a new engine ground and a new chassis ground. Going from the chassis to the block reads .02ohms so i know i have good grounds. Everynow and then it will decide it is going to charge and when it does I am very happy and it also charges just like normal. It will charge fine for awhile then go back to not chargeing for no reason at all. Also I dont know if this is related or not but my Anti-lock and parking brake lights are on but not bright, if i puch the parking brake down the light gets brighter. I have looked for a wiring diagram for the parking brake and anti-lock but have found nothng and my Haynes manual does me no good. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Jeremy

Message: For your parkbrake lamp to be on dim usualy means that your Brake fluid is low. Check for brake fliud leaks if that is good then check wear and rear brake adjustment.
As for your charging have you checked the wiring to the alt? You need your main batt feed, then there are several small wires in a plug,
I don't remember the colors but there should be
1 ecm ground
1 ignition power
1 other I think an ECM reference
Check your haynes manual for the exact wiring, if it all checks out then its time for the "Wiggle" test, start wiggling wires and harnesses, check any spot that may be near sharp, hot or moving parts for broken or worn wires. Hope this helps.
If any of this is wrong please corect me.

Message: and would be a whole lot faster then throwing money and parts at it just to go to a really good battery shop and have them test your whole battery/charging system, I don't know what they do in your neck of the woods but around my place I can find about a half dozen places that will do it for FREE.

Message: do you have/can you get/borrow a service manual? I remember discovering that my alternator was not working - and that the regulator was in the PCM. there are steps outlined in the book to disconnect connectors and run jumpers to diagnose the problem. In my case it was overcharging. and it still overcharged even though the PCM told it to back off. alternator in my case. sorry - I dont have the book any more for that year. since its intermittant it does sound more like a wiring/connection problem. also, all too often I've had rebuilt alternators that were no good.

Message: I'm not sure that a Chiltons/Haynes manual goes to this level of detail. NOTHING beats a true factory service manual. check ebay for one!

Message: Is there a shop you can trust in your area that you can go to? I can understand what you are going through. You are pulling your hair out over something that has got to be a simple fix. Might help to have a fresh set of eyes look at it.

Message: Totally and carefully inspect wiring harness
particularly between fuse box and firewall
also those " quick disconnect " connectors
on the positive heavy cables ..

Message: I think I may have found the problem. There is a wire harness that goes from the passanger side down to the bottom of the firewall then towards the cab of the truck. There are thre wires that touched the header and melted all the plastic off the wires and the three wires welded them selves together. I had to pull them apart from each other, and now i am going to get ome new wire and re wire this harness. Thanks for the help.
