Message: My 99 Dakota sport was having intermittent non-starting or shutting down issues. One mech said fuel pump that DID NOT fix it. It seems to be the ECU gets hot on very warm days and shuts down. Sometimes if I drive it and thepark it in the sun on a plus 90 degree day when I go to start it, it won't start. Maybe the ECU needs to be replaced but, in the meantime I have removed the cover of the under hood fusebox and it seems to keep the ECU from overheating. A low tech fix while I am saving up for a new ECU, LOL.

Message: I had the same problem with my 98 Dak. I replaced pretty much all of my sensors except for crank shaft sensor. Bought a new battery and replaced battery lines. Then bought a plug n play computer module (ECM) from an E-bay company in South FLA, and it has run ever since. Has not givin me the slightest sputter once it synced up with my truck. The computer kept throwing out error codes for all kinds of sensors, but it was the ECM that was bad. That company resells reprogrammed ECM's for $150.

Message: besides the cps there is also fly wheel position sensor that is located on the pass side of the bell housing and you can get to it from the wheel well. after fighting these same problems for 2 years I called a mech and that was the first thing that he recommended so I replaced it myself and no problems since. or atleast no problems with that.

Message: My 97 Dakota shut down while I was driving the other
day and now it won't start. No errors on the
computer, ASR is definitely good and working, fuel
pump works, but no voltage at ignition coil. I'm in
the process of opening up the harness and tracing
wires backwards now.

Message: Having same issues with my 1998 dodge dakota.
About 6 months ago my truck began idling rough and stalling idle. I thought it was the Idle/ Air Solenoid, changed it, did not fix it. Then it began shutting down while driving down the road..no warning, just dies! It used to start right back up, but now it sometimes has a problem starting, cranks strong, but hard to start. Seems if I let it sit about 5 minutes..it will start up. My sister had same dodge, same year and it turned out to be ECM. She ended up dumping the truck because she could not find ECM that was California approved for that vehicle. Can anyone tell me...
(1) Can ECM be tested?
(2) Where can I get it tested?
(3) Where can I buy a California Certified ECM made for my vehicle (if thats what is wrong with it)

Message: Before you throw more parts at it, have you checked for codes? Turn the key on/off/on/off/on and codes should display in the odometer as PXXXX and it will display Pdone when it's finished or no codes present. A bad PCM is a rarity for these trucks.

Message: 1992 Dakota: The problem seems to happen only on cold or cool mornings (all of the time now). The starter runs for a good length of time without the engine starting (Until about a month ago as soon as I hit the starter it would start every time). When I turned the key off I can hear a clicking sound, fast at first, gradually slowing down, then stopping. As soon as the clicking stops it will start instantly. I found tht the fuel pump relay and the auto shut off relay were making the clicking noise. I switched the auto shut off relay with one of the others but it didn’t help. I get a fault code of 12 (the battery hasn’t been disconnected in 6 month).
After this happens 1st thing in the morning it will not happen again until the next morning. Also, I wonder how the relays chatter for at least 45 seconds after I turn the key off.

Message: The code 12 you got is telling you that the PCM somehow lost power if you haven't disconnected the battery. Better get a schematic and start searching. I don't know if the '99's had the infamous splice #115 as the earlier like early 90's trucks do. That splice controlled power to the ASD, Fuel Pump, Ignition and PCM. Notorious for getting corroded and wreaking havoc.

Message: I have a 99 dakota if it is under 65 70 degrees it will not start. I have spark at the coil but dont seem to have any coming out of the dist. cap. replaced cap button plugs pick up coil under the dist. It just doesn't like the cold at all. Smokes a lil after sitting for a few days. Before it died completely it would start when cold but die unless i kept the pedal down once it warmed up to normal temp it ran fine no problems but cold nothing. O it backfired to when cold sounded like in the exhaust cat not clogged seems to blow air out fine

Message: 92 Dakota: I found several splices in the harness under the fuse/relay box. None looked bad but I respliced them. Did not help the problem. Took it to a mechanic and they found that the computer was bad. I suspected that that was the problem but it would have been an expensive guess. Anyway, problem solved. Runs good for 20 years old.
