Subject: poor fuel milage :-( IP: Logged
Message: what can i do to get better fuel milage out of my dak? today on my way to work a 12 mile trip took almost an 1/8th of a tank!!! that sucks.....
i don't stomp it all the time,, i accellerate until about 2800-3000 rpms and the tranny shifts (1/2 throttle) what gives? is it time to replace my o2 sensor? my dak has only 52k on the clock, new cap rotor wires and accell coil and autolite 3923 plugs gapped at .044.
thanking you in advance,

Message: I use amsoil in the engine, auto-tranny and differential. I have seen my mileage go up about 2 mpg across the board. Try the TPS mod, it will certainly make your gas pedal more responsive, try the IAT relocation that may help also. I also use a jet stage 2 chip, along with 180 thermostat.

Message: i have all the "usual" mods, (180* t/s cold air intake, ported v8 tb, perf exhaust, jet stage 2 chip, accell coil and super stock wires, autolite 3923s and removed the rubber flap)
i think the v8 tb made the most diff. i havent yet done the tps and iat mods yet, but the tps and crank sensor(s) are on the way in the mail. i'm thinking about taking the jet chip off my truck, it didnt seem to do anything.
i use amsoil in the engine, does it really make a big diff in the tranny and rear end. it sure quieted down my 3.9....
thanks

Message: also speaking about the tps sensor, i checked it a while ago and it was at about .70 vdc. but i get a (sometimes) pretty bad stumble off the line. especialy when doing a rollling stop :-( it only seems to do it when warmed up. i push the gas it sits for a split sec and then goes.... maybe its lost its adjustment, like i said i got one to mod on the way. plus a crank sensor to mod, so i don't screw up my factory sensors lol.
sorry for the double post, i just forgot to mention this.

Message: ported v8 tb
If you took the torque step out of a 50mm V8
body and are running it its to big and will hurt
gas mileage and cause a stumble on the low end
Have the o2, o2s checked with a scanner

Message: Hi Wadak,
I'm interested in increasing my mileage also,
are these the first steps?? what you said above??
Try the TPS mod, & try the IAT relocation that I also use a jet stage 2 chip, along with 180 thermostat.
Do you have more info on these items and where to get them. I did change my t-stat already, since I just had to do a timing chain job, head & valve job due to bent valves & rods.
Since I have this thing apart and redone heads I wanted to clean out the engine as much as possible and I must need a Miracle from God in order to get this Oil Pan off.
I have lowered the y-pipe, loosened the mounts, jacked the engine up (using chains on the front of the motor but I'm still about an inch shy of getting the pan to pass the torque cover, should I hook chains to the back of the motor also?? If you know anyone who might be able to help me with the oil pan info I sure would appreciate it. Kurt

Message: Lets work on this gas mileage problem
Here is exactly how I would go about it if it
were brought to our shop, with a poor gas
mileage complaint.
Scan, things to look at, all will effect gas mileage
Plugged or dirty air filter
Replace with stock,
recommend a K&N drop in life time air filter with free
service reoiling for the customer when needed
We do a few a month more in the summer.
Engine temp sensor reading (cold and operating temp)
IAT sensor "" "" ""
Map, baro and vac readings cold and warm
under load, reaction time
TPS voltage and operation
o2 sensor, should go into closed loop around 125 135
degrees and do a flip flop, rich center lean, rich center lean
.1 to 1 volt .2 to 1.2 somewhere in that range
All vac lines, pcv and breather
cap and rotor, wires,plugs
Plugs must be running tan not white or black
EGR older trucks
cat and exhaust system.
injector sync from 0 to +3
Any of this being off will hit your gas mileage
we also have an old dynavission scope we hook on the
trucks and can read coil volts and watch all plugs
fire on a screen to see any probs with ign output
an old oscilloscope unit still comes in handy

Message: 2002 3.9 5spd here with K&N drop in, brass cap and rotor, crank sensor mod, and i get about 17.5 tops on highway. Crank sensor mod did help some, maybe 2mpg more. DONT do the IAT relocate if you want better gas mileage. I've heard people say their mileage got better, mine got worse. Sorry to say, if you want better gas mileage gonna have to get rid of the truck. I've thought about it.

Message: what about my plugs, would having the gap opened up to .044 cause the problem? it dosent miss, it runs fine. i havent had a chance to read them lately. i bieleve my stock gap is .035? not sure though. could that cause a slight, intermittent off idle stumble too? maybe this performacne accell coil isnt all its cracked up to be :-(
thanks

Message: I just bought a 92 V-6 Dakota 4WD, 4-spd auto a few months ago. I get 16 mpg city, 19-20 highway. Just replaced thermostat that was stuck open, so expect to get better mileage next tankful. My gap was set between .040 and .044, and I had carbon tracking on the outside of the plugs. Since regapping to .035 and wiping carbon off, I get better mileage and smoother idle.
I'd suggest that you ease up on the throttle, also. These engines suck the gas when you get into it. I don't rev anywhere near 3000 unless I need to really stomp to get on the highway from a tight ramp. Otherwise, it will shift around 2000 RPM or less. You can use lighter throttle without being a grandma.

Message: my throttle wraps up alot because i got my tv cable tightened a lil bit for firmer shifts. even if im barely on it it still shifts around 1800-2k
maybe i should put it back to the factory shift points, but i like the firmer 1-2 shift (and faster kickdown). i have a shift improver kit sitting on a shelf waiting to be installed. no way am i going to even try! too many small parts. il just call aamco to get a quote on the install price.
thanks
