 Subject: Gen1 vs Gen2 questions

I was wondering, why did dodge change the five-lug dakotas(gen1) to the six-lug design(gen2)? is it because they are stronger? I heard that the gen2 dakotas have bigger brakes, is that true? Also, is it possible to put the brakes from the gen2 (mine's a 1993) on to the gen1 (mine is a 1989)set-up? I wanted to do this because im getting bigger tires(31 inches). Also to change the rearend to the six-lug design do i just have to change over the axles and brakes? Thanks for your help.
