Message: From what I've heard, a limited slip diff. is the key. It will power the unslipping wheel as much as the internal clutches have strength. A locker (true posi-track) will hurt you around corners. There is a reason why on-road vehicles have differentials, and a good one.
Just my digestion of what I've read here and a little personal knowledge/logic. Personally, I want an R/T's 3.92 rearend with limited slip. The speed runs off the axle on '98 up, so you can play with the gear ratios as much as you like and still have an accurate speedometer.

Message: You definitely DO NOT want posi-traction in snow or ice conditions! Posi is great on dry (not even wet) pavement in a straight line. But, put in a curve or ANY slippery conditions and you won't believe how FAST the back end of the truck will come around. Even the crown of the road can do it to you. I used to test drive fire trucks and the ones with posi would spin very easily. Stay with a limited slip-diff.

Message: Would the Powertrax no-slip make the back end swing out? Seems if you had a decent set of tires? 'Cuz to be honest without 500lbs in the back with the open rear end going forward up hill is a challange.

Message: you might be better off buying the rearend from a junkyard. If I'm not mistaken the V6 dakota has a 8.25 rearend and the R/T uses a 9.75 rearend.

Message: Get yourself a limited slip differential, you will have increased traction in the winter, but you will need to get some more power under the hood if you want to lay a patch in the summer on dry pavement because of the fact that you are now turning 2 wheels, not one.
Make sure you throw your 500lb in the box in the winter cause the limited slip will not compensate for the weight, the two working together though make a real good winter driving combination

Message: having a race car {olds cutlas} with possi I can tell you that possi in wet conditions is fun to try to control, especally with 400hp. in the water the rear wants to go side to side and around the world. this is fun in an empty lot but not in traffic with a lexus next to you. "OUCH"
stick with the one tire spinning for the snow.
I would get better tires though, the less spin means faster times at the end of the track.
the fatter the tire the bigger the contact patch the more the grip.

Message: Limited slip is the way to go.However with an automatic if you start sliding because of spinning tires and wet or icy roads Yes you can lose it very easily(like swapping ends)IF you have a standard trans it is easy to recover when you start to feel it sliding you simply push in the clutch it removes power to the wheels.Anyone who has driven a stick for any length of time will tell you it would be a natural reaction to push in clutch at that point in time.

Message: I really like the LSD. Like anything else it takes some getting used to but once you are 2 tires biting is better than one. I have very bad winters here and would never buy a truck without the LSD if I could avoid it.
